Where can I get a fault code scanner for my 2004 Ford Focus?

Can anyone recommend a cheap fault code scanner for my 2004 Ford Focus, that will save me having to pay diagnostic charges? I have seen a few on eBay that are handheld or laptop-based like the T40, U480 or Elm327. Or should I get one that's slightly more expensive, like a Maxiscan MS509?
