A lot of tyres these days are directional so you can only swap them back to front on the same side of the car. But 4WDs need their tyres to be as close as possible in circumference so it can make sense to do this. If the car has five same size non-directional tyres then rotating them every 5000 miles or so is a good idea, but time-consuming, hard work.
