Can I service my Renault Scenic's air conditioning system at home?

I would like to service my Renault Scenic's air conditioning system before I hit the road, as it is a bit smelly and not powerful. I would like to do it myself on a budget. What do I need? I just ordered a can of air cleaner. I need some gas - can I change the filter? Last time a young chap from Halfords couldn't find the valve to check the pressure, so I would need to know where to find it.

A/C FAQ answer at HJUK. You cannot self service air conditioning systems without considerable risk.
