How much is the first year VED?

I have paid a deposit on a pre-reg Kia Rio. The dealer has stated that I must pay £30 road tax, yet sources say that for the first year tax is Zero. The car is a 16 plate (registered in march 2016) and I am purchasing the car in June 2016 (only 3 months in to it's first year of tax). Why am I not paying Zero for my tax as it is still in it's first year?

The first year, first owner VED rate is £0. But because you are the 2nd owner you are subject to the annual VED, which is £30pa.
