Do you have to fit new tyres in pairs?

I own a Volkswagen Golf. It is just one year old and has 10,000 miles on the clock. However, yesterday I had to replace one of the rear tyres. Can I just replace the single tyre or do I need to do it in pairs?

Replacing one part worn rear tyre with a new one on a front wheel drive car is fine. Problems come when there is greater wear on the tyres of a car with automatic four wheel drive because replacing just one tyre creates a mismatch which the system may think is slippage and wear to the centre clutch can occur.
