Efficient petrol car for high annual mileage - what do you recommend?
I'm looking to replace my 2006 Honda Civic 1.8 with a petrol car that does similar MPG or ideally better with similar power. I currently get 45 MPG, so would like to get a minimum 45-55 real world MPG. I do 25000 miles per year over a long commute which is 50% motorway, 25% heavy urban traffic, 25% hilly country roads.
My budget is £5-6k, but I could stretch higher providing the depreciation is below £1k per year. My aim is to keep the car for 5-6 years with average service/repair costs less than £500 per year.

No petrol engined car on your list is as good as the Civic 1.8 i-VTEC except the current, more aerodynamic Civic 1.8 i-VTEC and that's over budget. I too got 45mpg out of the original (and 48 out of the new one).
