What's your opinion of runflat tyres, as fitted to the BMW 5 Series?

I have recently had a test drive of the new BMW 5 Series saloon and was very impressed. I have few reservations about the car, but one is that runflat tyres come as standard with no other option. For UK motoring this wouldn't concern me, but I frequently drive in Europe and being stranded halfway up a French or Italian mountain with a seriously damaged runflat tyre could be a nightmare. What are your views on modern-day runflat tyres please?

The best alternative to carrying a spare wheel, and one that can save your life because changing a wheel on a motorway is one of the most dangerous things you can do.
