Nissan X-Trail making a strange noise when towing

I have a 2009 Nissan X-Trail with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The vehicle has covered 38,000 miles and tows a caravan in the summer. Last week the vehicle made a strange thud noise. Once was whilst towing, the other time was solo. There were a couple of hundred miles between these happening. Any Ideas?

It's a torque converter auto so all I can think of is that the fluid became overheated while towing and affected the operation of the servo valve block. Might benefit from a change of transmission fluid. Talk to a member of www.fedauto.co.uk
