Volkswagen Golf 1.4 Twist starting problems - what is it?

Trying to start the Golf the engine starts to turn then the message CLUTCH appears on the display and the car will not start. Sometimes changing the key sorts it out, sometimes not. Once I can get the car started I have no problems until the car is left overnight then the next morning I get the same message.

Are you pressing the clutch when you try to start the car? You should be.
