Is there something wrong with my Honda Jazz's brake discs?

We bought a 2007 Honda Jazz in May from a Honda dealer, and so far I am very pleased with it. However, whilst we were on holiday recently, a friend noticed a soot-like deposit on the front wheel hubs, and said that it was from the brake pads. He felt under the wheel rim, and said the pads/discs were quite rough, and we should get them looked at. They certainly felt rough to me, but I've no idea what pads/discs are supposed to feel like anyway. I'm wary about phoning the dealer, as they gave us quite a hard sell when we bought it, and I'm afraid of being blinded with science! Can you advise please?

Brake dust does look like black soot, but if this is excessive then you have better get the pads checked.
