Why won't Jaguar pay to have my X-Type's air bags inspected?

I bought a 2004 Jaguar X-Type estate a year ago from a private dealer. Last week I turned on the ignition and the passenger seat airbag and the passenger side curtain airbag engaged. There was no impact or anything, and the car was not moving. I contacted Jaguar's head office and explained what happened. They were very interested and suggested that I take vehicle to my local Jaguar dealer. However they would not absorb the costs of checking why this event happened. They claim that as the car was out of warranty and was not serviced by a Jaguar dealer, they would not accept liability. This is, in my opinion, a manufacturer's fault and the cost of diagnosis should be borne by Jaguar. Do I have any rights in this issue?

No. Anything could have been done to the car between 2004 and now. It may even have been crashed.
