I haven't insured a car in my own name for three years. How can I get back my no-claims bonus?

I'm a driving instructor and have had the use of the school's car for the last two and a half years, hence no insurance in my own name. I now need to insure a car but find my NCB has evaporated. I have been claim-free for over twenty years and have been a named driver on my wife's claim-free policies for a similar length of time. Is there anything I can do to claim back my NCB or must I start all over again?
