Should I buy a Volkswagen Golf or a Mazda 3?

I have a budget of no more than £6500 and am looking for a smallish car, something like a Volkswagen Golf or Mazda 3, no more than four years old. Which of these would you recommend?

The Mazda 3, because it's more reliable than a Golf V.
