Should we pay for road tax on a car which is being delivered late?

My wife ordered a brand new Honda CR-V for delivery on 1 September, but it arrived at the dealer several days late and, as we had not sold her old one, we were not too concerned. We would like to take delivery this Saturday but he cannot get it ready till next week. I have suggested that in that case we will leave it until 1 October, but he claims we will still have to pay for September's road tax. Is he trying it on?

No, because if the car is registered in September tax has to be paid from 1 September.
