What's knocking at the back of my Peugeot 306?

I have a 2000 W-reg Peugeot 306 diesel estate which produces a knocking from what seems to be the back of the car, although one witness believes the noise is from the front. Any suggestions please? The rear shocks have been tested.

Probably the rear bits of the exhaust being hit by the suspension under compression. Might just need re-hanging slightly.
