Should I buy a Cat D car?
Can I find out what damage was done to a car that's a Cat D and why it was written off? The seller doesn't know.

No, the only way would be to have it inspected by an independent engineer, I suggest you do this with any car you are looking at purchasing. You can find one here. www.iaea-online.org/ The question to ask is, why do you want to buy a car that has been a total loss? Unless you know what you are doing, walk away. Nothing is ever a bargain when it could put you and your passengers at risk.
