The 4 Series Gran Coupe sees BMW branching into new territory with a four-door version of the Coupe that rivals the popular Audi A5 Sportback. BMW says it's designed as a sleeker and sportier alternative to the 3 Series saloon with features like frameless doors and an electric tailgate as standard.
Despite the extra doors, the Gran Coupe is actually the same length as the 4 Series Coupe with the same wheelbase. This means it shares the same good looks as its two-door counterpart albeit with a higher roofline which stretches further back.
This has a big impact on interior space with impressive room in the back, even for taller passengers. The boot is the same size as a 3 Series but more practical thanks to the hatchback opening and split folding rear seats.
The engine range follows that of the 4 Series Coupe with one addition - the 418d. This will have big appeal for company car drivers, many of whom don't have two-door coupes as an option, meaning they can now move up to a 4 Series.
However, the 420d is our choice as it blends strong performance with impressive economy of 60mpg, while the 435d is the stand out engine with performance not far short of the M4. Four-wheel drive xDrive - a £1500 extra - is also available on several models, including the 420d.
One of the criticisms of the 4 Series Coupe was its overly stuff ride, but BMW has changed things for the Gran Coupe and it's far more forgiving and comfortable. Yet it still has the handling and grip you'd expect from a BMW with a wonderful precision to all the major controls like the clutch and gearbox. It's a great car for long distances thanks to excellent noise insulation and supportive seats.
The 4 Series is a near faultless car and a more desirable alternative to the 3 Series. It's certainly better than the now ageing Audi A5 Sportback with better refinement on the move. Standard equipment levels are good with leather upholstery, DAB, heated seats and the electric tailgate as standard on all models. Yet despite the extra doors, prices have been kept the same as the 4 Series Coupe.

One of the criticisms of the 4 Series Coupe was its overly firm ride, particularly on M Sport models, but BMW has clearly altered things and the 4 Series Gran Coupe is blessed with a smooth and forgiving ride that makes it the ideal long distance car.
Even on M Sport models with larger wheels and firmer suspension, the 4 Series Gran Coupe copes well on rough surfaces and over potholes. The SE and Luxury models are particularly good and it's no surprise to find out the 4 Series chassis was tested on UK roads during development.
Add to that the lack of road and wind noise on the move, plus the impressively refined engines and strong noise insulation and the 4 Series Gran Coupe is every inch the serene long distance car. There's more to it than just the ride quality though. This is a BMW after all, so you get well weighted steering and great handling. The Gran Coupe is the same length as the 4 Series Coupe and feels just as agile and as surefooted with great grip through corners.
It's a real joy to drive, effortlessly flowing from corner to corner, plus alongside the standard rear-wheel drive models, BMW is also offering xDrive four-wheel drive with certain engines including the 420d and 435d. While purists may prefer rear-wheel power, xDrive gives the 4 Series Gran Coupe added traction and security in tricky conditions such as snow, especially when fitted with winter tyres.
One engine in the Gran Coupe range which isn't available in the 4 Series Coupe or Convertible is the 418d. Aimed mainly at company car drivers, who often are restricted in their choice bodystyles, the 418d has CO2 emissions of just 121g/km yet still has 143PS.
However, it's the 420d that stands out as the perfect engine for the 4 Series Gran Coupe, blending refinement, enough power and strong economy. It develops 184PS but it's the 380Nm of torque that makes all the difference and means it pulls impressively strongly in-gear.
Claimed economy is 60.1mpg with the standard six-speed manual which has a nice positive shift, but we'd recommend going for the optional eight-speed automatic which offers quick and decisive changes. It suits this engine perfectly. Even going for the xDrive version - a £1500 extra - only sees economy drop to 58.9mpg with the auto.
The bigger 430d and 435d models both use a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that has a strong character and huge reserves of torque. The 435d is our star of the range and with 313PS plus 630Nm of torque it really shifts along with a 0-62mph time of just 4.8 seconds - that's only half a second slower than the M4. It's effortlessly quick and comes with the eight-speed Sport automatic gearbox and xDrive as standard.
The petrol range starts with the 420i that has the same 184PS as the 420d, albeit it with less torque, but still reasonable economy of 44.1mpg. The same 2.0-litre engine is used in the 428i, but with power boosted to 245PS. It's very smooth and refined but does lack the character of a six-cylinder engine, which BMW-badged 28i models traditionally used.
The top petrol is the mighty 435i which has 306PS but it's actually not as quick as the 435d from 0-62mph with an acceleration time of 5.5 seconds with the manual gearbox while economy is only 34.9mpg.

Getting behind the wheel of the 4 Series Gran Coupe is very much like getting behind the wheel of a 4 Series Coupe. That's hardly surprising when you realise that the Gran Coupe has almost identical dimensions to the Coupe with the same overall length and wheelbase. But what's impressive is how spacious it feels inside, particularly in the back. In fact it's hard to believe it's the same size as the two-door.
There's a low slung driving position with plenty of adjustment in the steering column and seat. It feels very much a driver's car with all the controls focussed toward the driver.
Sit in the back and you'll find plenty of legroom and, perhaps more surprisingly, generous headroom, even if you're six foot plus. Despite the coupe-like roofline you don't feel hemmed in while the frameless doors add an extra touch of style.
All models come with an electric tailgate as standard - an impressively upmarket feature - and the hatchback opening makes this a very practical alternative to a conventional saloon. As an option there's a smart-open feature where a sweep with the foot under the rear bumper activates the tailgate opener.
It has a 480-litre boot, the same as a 3 Series and the Audi A5 Sportback, plus you can fold down the rear seats in a 60/40 split for carrying more awkward items. The load floor is flat and the wide boot opening makes loading larger loads much easier.
The quality is everything we've come to expect from BMW with a premium feel throughout and an impeccable level of fit and finish. Standard equipment levels are good too so along with the electric tailgate all models come with leather upholstery, heated front seats and DAB digital radio. Luxury and M Sport models come with the Business Navigation package as standard.

BMW revealed 4 Series Gran Coupe
Following the launch of the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible, the Gran Coupe is the third model to join the new BMW 4 Series, which is longer, wider and more dynamic than any of the previous midsize series due to the balanced proportions of the vehicles.
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has exactly the same dimensions as the two-door coupe: a length of 4,638 millimeters, a width of 1,825 millimeters and a wheelbase of 2,810 millimeters. Up front, both models are identical and share the typical BMW design features. However, the roof of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is twelve millimeters higher, 112 mm longer and gently stretched allowing it to flow smoothly into the rear quarter panels and boot lid.

This extended roofline highlights the elegance and sophistication of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, while setting new standards for aesthetics in the midsize class that also have decisive practical advantages. For example, there is more headroom in the interior, not to mention added comfort. The boot volume of 480 liters is 35 liters larger than that of the two-door version for more convenience in meeting the challenges of everyday driving situations with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.
The 40:20:40 split folding backrest of the rear seat ensures added flexibility. The maximum volume of the boot is 1300 litres and is best-in-class when it comes to the premium four-door coupés currently offered. The boot lid is equipped as standard with an automatic opening and closing mechanism for maximum convenience, and the Smart Opener feature can be ordered to open and close the lid with a movement of the foot.
The new 4 Series Gran Coupe offers a choice of five powerful, cultivated and efficient engines. The high-end is represented by the 435i’s six-cylinder in-line 3.0-litre petrol engine delivering 306PS. The 428i Gran Coupe and the 420i Gran Coupe are equipped with light and powerful four-cylinder engines that deliver 245PS and 184PS, respectively.
Like all BMW diesel variants, the two four-cylinder engines are known for their smoothness, torque and outstanding efficiency. The 420d Gran Coupe delivers 184PS and sprints from 0 to 62 mph in only 7.7 seconds (7.5 seconds with sport automatic transmission). The engine in the 418d Gran Coupe has an output of 143PS. At model launch, the 428i Gran Coupe and 420d Gran Coupe can be optionally equipped with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive technology.

New engines for BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
Following the official launch date of 21 June 2014, four additional model variants bring greater choice to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe range from summer 2014. On three of these variants, the engine power is transferred to the road via all four wheels thanks to BMW’s intelligent xDrive system.
These models include the BMW 420i xDrive Gran Coupe, with its 184PS four-cylinder petrol engine. This new model sprints from standstill to 62mph in 7.6 seconds. Average fuel consumption is 40.9mpg for the BMW 420i xDrive Gran Coupé while the corresponding CO2 emission level is 161g/km. The 420i xDrive Gran Coupe costs from £30,960 OTR.
The new BMW 430d Gran Coupe is available in both rear and four-wheel-drive form. The straight six-cylinder diesel engine develops 258hp and is mated to an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission on both models. This enables the rear-wheel-drive variant to accelerate from zero to 62mph in 5.6 seconds, while the BMW xDrive variant requires just 5.3 seconds to accomplish this task. The consumption and CO2 values are equally impressive: the BMW 430d Gran Coupe returns a fuel consumption of 55.4mpg (53.3mpg with xDrive) with CO2 emissions of 134g/km (140g/km with xDrive).
In the new BMW 435d xDrive Gran Coupe, the most powerful straight six-cylinder diesel engine generates a maximum output of 313hp, and is only available with xDrive and the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. It takes just 4.8 seconds to sprint from zero to 62mph, with average fuel consumption of 50.4mpg and a CO2 emission rating of 146g/km. It is priced at £44,545 OTR for a 435d xDrive Luxury Gran Coupé.
From the summer of 2014, the new eight-speed automatic transmission featuring Proactive Drive is available for models in the BMW 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series and 5 Series ranges. On vehicles equipped with satellite navigation, the Proactive Drive system ensures that the moment to shift gears is precisely adapted to the current driving situation. The system works even if the navigation system is not active at that given moment.

New engine range for BMW 4 Series
The BMW 440i Coupe gets from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds (automatic: 5.0 seconds), the BMW 440i Convertible does it in 5.4 seconds and the BMW 440i Gran Coupe manual makes 5.1 seconds.
Fuel economy 38.2 mpg (automatic: 42.8 mpg) and 159 – 154 g/km for the BMW 440i Coupe; 7.2 – 6.8 41.5 mpg and 167 –159 g/km for the BMW 440i Convertible and 42.8 mpg and 159 – 154 g/km for the BMW 440i Gran Coupe all with standard wheels and tyres.
The new four-cylinder petrol engines offer 252hp and 350 Nm; 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds (auto: 5.8 seconds) for the BMW 430i Coupe; 6.4 seconds (auto 6.3 seconds) for the new BMW 430i Convertible and 5.9 seconds (auto 5.9 seconds) for the BMW 430i Gran Coupe. The BMW 430i Coupe and BMW 430i Gran Coupe NEDC combined is 46.3 mpg (automatic: 51.4 mpg imp) and 136 – 129 g/km CO2. The BMW 430i Convertible does 42.8 mpg (auto 47.9 mpg imp) and 146 – 138 g/km.
The BMW 420i Coupe, BMW 420i Convertible and BMW 420i Gran Coupe also get 2.0 litre versions of the new modular engine. This gives 184hp. All get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with 8 speed Steptronic option. The BMW 420i Coupe gets to 62 in 7.3 seconds (auto: 7.5 seconds), while the BMW 420i Convertible does it in 8.2 and 8.4 and the BMW 420i Gran Coupe in 7.5 and 7.7. Combined fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 48.7 mpg (automatic: 51.4 mpg imp) and 134 – 127 g/km for both the BMW 420i Coupe and the BMW 420i Gran Coupe, while the BMW 420i Convertible does 45.6 mpg as a manual or 48.7 mpg as an auto (144 – 136 g/km).
The BMW 425d Coupe, BMW 425d Convertible and BMW 425d Gran Coupe with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology develop 165 kW/224 hp and peak torque of 450 Nm. 0-62 for the coupe is 6.5 (auto 6.1); convertible 7.1 (auto 6.7); Gran Coupe 6.7 (auto 6.3). Incorporated into the BMW Professional media system, the latest iDrive interface and enhanced connectivity provides a simpler menu navigation requiring fewer clicks to move between key sections such as map view, messages, entertainment and media and an increase in RAM to improve performance. This new system also allows the wireless integration of selected third party applications from a compatible mobile device.
In addition to the already standard Bluetooth connectivity this can be further enhanced by opting for the new Enhanced Bluetooth which alongside the upgraded BMW Professional Navigation system now includes Wireless Charging, WiFi Hotspot preparation and an additional USB socket. The new Enhanced Bluetooth with Wireless Charging is offered as standard on all BMW 6 Series and 7 Series models as well as the M3, M4, X5M and X6M.
Accessing a library of over 30 million tracks available to stream at any time as part of BMW Online Entertainment is now even easier thanks to the new Connected Music feature. This introduces the additional option, when listening to the radio, of recognising the track, artist or album. The listener can then search for and stream other music by that artist or music of the same genre.

BMW 4 Series refreshed for 2017
Distinguished by larger air intake and LED headlights and rear lights. Unbroken central air intake with an aperture that increases in size towards the outer edges. On the Sport version, the air intake is almost entirely bordered by an eye-catching, high-gloss black bar.
The BMW 4 Series is now equipped with new twin LED headlights as standard. The headlights are composed of flat-bottomed headlight tubes encircled by DRL rings, along with a dynamic cropped look, produced by the characteristic ‘eyebrow’ design. LED front fog lamps also form part of the standard specification.
Inside the 2017 BMW 4 Series range an array of upgraded details include the surrounds for the air vents and the control panels in the doors now including electroplated inserts, while the switch for the hardtop roof in the BMW 4 Series Convertible and the integral belt guides for its front seats also have an electroplated finish.
Options include Night Blue Dakota, Cognac Dakota and Ivory White Dakota leather with coordinated contrast stitching and piping. Further choices for the interior trim, meanwhile, include Aluminium Carbon with Pearl Chrome highlight and Black High-Gloss with Pearl Chrome highlight.
2017 4 Series Gran Coupe models start from SE for the 420d/420d xDrive models moving to the Sport model as standard for the 420i/420i xDrive models. As with the Coupé and Convertible models, 430i, 430d/430d xDrive, 435d xDrive and 440i models come as M Sport only.
A wider choice of 18 and 19-inch light-alloy wheels exclusive to the new 4 Series is also now available. Snapper Rocks Blue, a new shade of turquoise and Sunset Orange are new paint options.
The 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupé and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé both now come with stiffer suspension, featuring more advanced damping technology and an upgraded steering set-up. These have resulted in a tangible improvement in both lateral and longitudinal handling properties, regardless of the load on board. The upshot is reduced roll, more neutral responses when driving at the limit, even greater straight-line stability and precise steering. This applies to the standard suspension, as well as the M Sport suspension and Adaptive suspension.

All new BMW 4 Series models are available with three petrol engines offering the following power ratings: the 420i with 184hp, the 430i with 252hp and the top-of-the-range 440i with 326hp. Combined fuel consumption is 35.8-51.4mpg, while CO2 emissions range from 127g/km to 185g/km.
There is also a choice of three diesel engines: the 420d with 190hp, 430d with 258hp and 435d xDrive with 313hp. Combined fuel consumption ranges from 47.9-70.6mpg with CO2 emissions of 106-155g/km.
Depending on the model, the BMW 4 Series Coupé, BMW 4 Series Convertible and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé can be specified with either a six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed Steptronic transmission, which is already fitted as standard on the BMW 430d/BMW 430d xDrive, BMW 435d xDrive, BMW 440i Convertible and BMW 440i Gran Coupé.

What to watch out for
Report of 2016 BMW 420d MSport Grand Coupe drive train light coming on every now and then, but this morning it came on and appears to be shutting the engine down the engine and warning light has come on. Driver stopped and restrated the car and the engine light has staying on the drive train message has gone. Car is driven 20km each way every day in traffic. EGR and DPF must have sooted up.

02-04-2019:Report of misfire at cruising speeds from June 2017 BMW 420d Gran Coupe. Dealer replaced an oxygen sensor but issue persists. (Feels like "momentarily slipping into neutral.)
21-08-2019:Report of trim of front valence of black 2015 BMW 4-Seried Gran Coupe fading to a grey/blue colour. Dealer says whole of this trim needs replacing. It appears to be the only bit of plastic on the vehicle that has changed in this way. Sun damage seems to be the consensus.
