MINI Countryman Verdict

4/5

+Biggest ever MINI. Upmarket and quirky interior. Good to drive. Available as a plug-in hybrid.

-Very expensive to buy new. Firm ride. Not great at long distances. Most of the smart kit is optional.

First things first - the new Countryman is the biggest MINI ever. For most people that’s not an issue by now, but if you’re still in the "Minis should be small and packaged cleverly" camp, this Countryman small SUV is conspicuously offensive.

That said, it is packaged cleverly. Remove the BMW-era MINI design nonsense and you’ll see that the Countryman actually squeezes a lot of space and practicality into a relatively compact footprint.

It’s also fantastic to drive, as these things go. No other mid-sized SUV feels as sharply engaging as the Countryman. That BMW has managed to expand the dynamic essence of the MINI hatchback into a package this large is truly impressive.

The downside of that is relatively firm ride quality, making this one of the less comfortable crossovers over long distances. Added to that, the seats – although good looking by design – are on the small side and won’t suit all.

Its combination of practicality and downright quirkiness will really appeal to some, though. MINI’s cabin design is both unique and high quality, and although the whole ‘central speedometer and toggles aplenty’ shtick is losing its lustre now, three generations in, it’s still a refreshing change from the ever-more-homogenous cabin design of many crossovers.

The Countryman is practical too, with plenty of headroom and a significant improvement in rear leg space compared to the outgoing model.

Alongside the familiar MINI petrol and diesels - Cooper and Cooper D, Cooper S and SD, and John Cooper Works - there’s a plug-in hybrid (or PHEV for short) too, called Cooper S E. It boasts some startling numbers with 134.5mpg and 49g/km.

That makes the PHEV a fantastic company car proposition because of the tax breaks, though private buyers will find its high list price and poor real-world economy off-putting.

A standard Cooper or Cooper D should suffice though, offering decent performance and economy while keeping the price reasonable – in the mid-£20k range. For that you’ll get a crossover full of personality that’s practical, versatile and great to drive, albeit not flawless.

MINI Countryman handling and engines

If you’re after a MINI-like driving experience with space, you’ve found it here. An obvious statement, yes, but what’s so impressive about the Countryman is just how much it’s like the much smaller MINI hatchback behind the wheel.

That’s a two-edged sword though, because while it makes the Countryman the most involving mid-sized crossover with which to enjoy a back road, it also means it doesn’t have the lightness or comfort you might want door-to-door.

The steering rack is heavy – sporty, even – compared to most SUVs and crossovers, plus the ride quality is on the firm side. That might help the Countryman feel small and dynamic, but it also makes things seem cumbersome and relatively unrelaxing at low speeds. Most crossovers are more comfortable than the Countryman around the doors, it’s fair to say.

The Countryman also comes undone a little over long distances, for similar reasons. The hard-set suspension lacks a little of the give that it takes to soften a motorway, while cars equipped with an optional panoramic sunroof suffer from very excessive wind noise. The MINI’s seats aren’t the most comfortable on the market either – also on the firm side.

But the engine line-up is fantastic. It’s true that the three-cylinder petrol unit in the Cooper looks a little underpowered, with 136PS dragging along all this crossover (0-62mph: 9.6 seconds), but sounds great and it generates its maximum 220Nm torque at just 1400rpm. Flexible, like.

It gets better from there. The Cooper S has genuine pace and character (7.5 seconds from 0-62mph), and although the Cooper D and SD diesels lack the charm, they make up for it with excellent economy (65.7 and 61.4mpg respectively) and great low speed flexibility. All that torque, see.

The PHEV is a little different, given its complexity. In a nutshell, it combines an 88PS electric motor with the 136PS three-cylinder petrol engine from the Cooper, the former driving the rear wheels and the latter the fronts. The result is 224PS and 385Nm giving a 6.8-second 0-62mph time, as well as 20-odd miles zero emissions driving, in the right conditions.

It’s impressively economical (134.5mpg) and a company car tax dream (49g/km CO2), but it’s not without flaw – click here to read our reports during six months running a Countryman PHEV.

The Countryman has also been awarded a five-star rating from Euro NCAP, with an especially excellent 90 per cent score for adult occupant protection, with 80 per cent for children.

Full specifications

If you’ve spent any time in any BMW-era MINI then the Countryman’s interior will feel very familiar. Massive central sat nav unit (standard on all Countrymans…Countrymen?), small bubble rev counter, toggle switches everywhere, soft touch surfaces and a very hefty feeling in general. It’s fair to say that MINI cabin design has very gently evolved since 2001.

But that’s no bad thing, because the Countryman is still the most idiosyncratic crossover there is – and a welcome differentiator in the ever-swelling sea of conspicuously homogenous SUV-type family cars. An example of a little smile-inducing touch - there are a few of them - is the backlit pinstriped dashboard, whose colour you can change.

It’s all very intuitively laid out too – the massive toggles and dials are easy to find and read. All intuitive, that is, apart from the multimedia interface for the infotainment unit. MINI’s iDrive-based system (a BMW staple) uses a scroll wheel and shortcut buttons on the centre console. And to this day – as in the early 2000s - it makes simple things like inputting a postcode or finding a song needlessly complicated. The screen is touch sensitive but that sometimes feels like an afterthought.

The driving position is excellent, though – assuming you can get comfortable in the strangely small chairs. Most people should find a good driving position, with MINI’s whole ‘go kart handling’ thing applying here and making for a quite low set chair, with lots of adjustment for the wheel too.

Saying that, all round visibility is excellent, especially at the front because of the large upright screen and thin front pillars – more hallmarks of unchanging MINI design.

Boot space is much improved over the outgoing Countryman – up by 100 litres to 450, putting it in the upper echelons of the family crossover set. The Nissan Qashqai has 430 litres. Added to that the loading floor is nice and flat, the boot lip small and unobtrusive, while the rear bench not only tilts forward to liberate more space, but has a 40/20/40 split. The PHEV version loses some boot space on account of the battery, so is down to 405 litres.

Elsewhere in the cabin, although there’s plenty of rear space – certainly enough for all but the tallest adults and a big improvement over the outgoing Countryman – there’s a slight lack of oddment space. The door pockets are quite shallow, there’s limited space in the centre console and the glovebox is quite small. It’s a car that can quickly become engulfed in detritus.

Standard equipment:

Cooper specification includes 16-inch wheels fitted with 225/55 R17 tyres, roof rails, Thatcham Category 1 alarm system, air conditioning, hated door mirrors and washer jets, rear park distance control, three-seat rear bench w/ 40/20/40 split, Dynamic Stability Control, six airbags, tyre puncture warning system, six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, DAB radio, navigation, USB connection and passenger airbag deactivation

Cooper S/SD adds 17-inch alloy wheels and cloth-leather upholstery

Chilli pack adds automatic air con, MINI driving modes, part-leather sports seats and LED headlamps

TLC pack adds five-year/50,000 mile tservicing package incl. first service visit (oil service and micro-filter), brake fluid service at two years (brake fluid service at four years is not covered), second service visit (oil service, micro-filter, vehicle check, spark plugs and air filter)

Model History

October 2016

Second generation MINI Countryman launched

The 2017 MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model to be launched in the brand’s 57-year history. With its larger external dimensions, and increases in space throughout the cabin and luggage area, it offers occupants even greater comfort and a genuinely premium ambience. Useful new features such as electric tailgate control with touch-free opening and unique options, including a fold down picnic bench at the rear, add to the ownership experience.

For the first time MINI is offering a plug-in hybrid model with the new MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV. Drawing from expertise gleaned from across the BMW Group, this new hybrid features a turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor, reducing fuel consumption to 134.5 mpg yet also enabling a 0-62 mph time of just 6.9 seconds (details below).

The rest of the 2017 MINI Countryman line-up is powered by an all-new range of engines sourced from the latest MINI TwinPower Turbo generation, offering outstanding performance and efficiency. With between 136 – 192PS and 220-400Nm of torque, the new MINI Countryman can sprint from 0-62 mph in as little as 7.2 seconds, while fuel consumption reaches 64.2 mpg and emissions drop as low as 113g/km.

The 2017 MINI Countryman is available with both manual and Steptronic gearboxes and with front- and all-wheel drive. The latter, MINI’s ALL4 system, has been further refined for increased driving agility and efficiency.

Additions to the standard equipment list include MINI’s Satellite Navigation System, Bluetooth, Cruise Control, Emergency E-call and Active Guard among others. Naturally, being a MINI, there is broad scope for owners to personalise their new Countryman, with extensive colour and trim options, advanced technology features and a range of option packs that offer carefully selected items with significant cost savings for the customer. One such option is a new 8.8-inch touchscreen display as part of the MINI Navigation System XL, offering touchscreen multimedia and navigation control for the first time in a MINI.

The 2017 MINI Countryman is available to order at MINI franchises nationwide today starting at £22,465 for the Cooper Countryman, with the first UK deliveries in February 2017. Prices for the plug-in hybrid model will be announced in due course.

Both driver and front passenger benefit from extended head and shoulder space, while the adjustment range of the seats has also been extended. Electrical adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats is now an option, including a memory function on the driver's side.

The second row of seating now contains three fully-fledged seats, and the rear door openings have been enlarged, enabling easier entry and exit. In addition to overall interior width, leg space is now significantly more generous too, with an extra five centimetres of knee room over the previous model. The rear seats can be shifted back and forth by up to 13 cm, prioritising either passenger legroom or boot capacity depending on the situation. The folding rear backrest offers a 40 : 20 : 40 split and also provides a variable tilt angle so as to also offer either increased seating comfort or additional storage space at the rear.

The 2017 MINI Countryman also benefits from more storage for on-board items and increased overall cargo capacity both with the seats in position and when lowered. In both the front and rear doors there are pockets that hold one-litre beverage bottles and the centre console extending up to the instrument panel has an integrated storage compartment and two cup holders in front of the gear or selector lever. The MINI Controller and the switch for the electrical parking brake are also positioned on the centre console.

The luggage compartment volume is 450 litres and can be extended by folding the rear seats to a total of 1,309 litres. This constitutes a maximum increase of 220 litres as compared to the previous generation model.

The luggage area can be accessed via an optional electric tailgate with touch-free opening and closing possible in conjunction with Comfort Access. The optional storage package comprises a variable load floor, lashing eyes and tension straps and also a stainless steel insert on the loading sill. One unique option is the Picnic Bench – a flexible surface that folds out of the luggage compartment and provides seating for two people.

The 2017 MINI Countryman is available at launch with a choice of four new engines: two petrol-powered variants and two diesels. In addition, for the first time there will be a plug-in hybrid MINI, the Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (see below).

MINI Cooper Countryman: 3-cylinder petrol engine, capacity: 1499cc, output: 136PS, torque: 220Nm.

MINI Cooper S Countryman: 4-cylinder petrol engine, capacity: 1998cc, output: 192PS, torque: 280Nm.

MINI Cooper D Countryman: 4-cylinder diesel engine, capacity: 1995cc, output: 150PS, torque: 330Nm.

MINI Cooper SD Countryman: 4-cylinder diesel engine, capacity: 1995cc, output: 190PS, torque: 400Nm.

March 2017

MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV launched

Available to order from March 2017 and in showrooms from June 2017, the new MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV is priced from £31,585 OTR. On the road pricing does not include the government plug-in car grant.

The MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV emits just 49g/km of CO2 and has an all electric range of 25 miles from the battery alone with electric only top speeds of 78mph. This means the car is eligible for the additional £2,500 Office for Low Emissions Government Grant.

The first plug-in hybrid model in the MINI product range offers sporty agility on the road as well as competency beyond the asphalt thanks to its intelligent all-wheel drive system. The MINI Countryman ALL4 hybrid system is made up of a 3-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and a synchronous electric motor. Together they generate a system output of 224PS enabling the car to sprint from standing to 62mph in 6.8 seconds.

The eDRIVE toggle switch enables the driver to continue to drive with only the electric engine beyond this point if preferred: in MAX eDRIVE mode the MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV runs at up to 78mph free of local emissions. The electric range of the first MINI plug-in hybrid model is 25 miles.

The energy required for this is stored in a high-voltage lithium-ion battery. It can be charged at a conventional household socket or, for increased power input and reduced waiting times, at a wallbox or public charging station. Charging takes between 2:15 and 3:15 hours.

The MINI Countryman ALL4 PHEV combines its progressive drive system with the versatile space concept and hallmark brand style of the latest MINI model range. The battery is housed underneath the rear seat and flat load boot floor, minimising drawbacks to boot space and leg room. The luggage compartment volume of the hybrid model is 405 litres, which can be extended to as much as 1 275 litres with the rear backrests folded down.

The new Untamed Edition emphasises the adventurous nature of the MINI Countryman, with exclusive design and equipment features highlighting its robust look and off-road potential. The edition is available on the Cooper, Cooper S and Plug-In Hybrid variants.

On the exterior, the Untamed Edition has exclusive Momentum Grey metallic paintwork gives this MINI Countryman a unique appearance. Complementing the body colour, the lower air intake surround, air inserts in the front apron, side skirts, reflector inserts and the lower insert in the rear apron are also painted in metallic Momentum Grey. MINI brand logos on the bonnet and tailgate reveals are also finished in the body colour, as are the associated trim elements when ALL4 is specified.

Four diagonal stripes towards the bottom of the doors are highlighted in Frozen Bluestone. 18-inch alloy wheels in Untamed two-tone design with burnished surfaces have been developed exclusively for the edition. The roof rails and the headlight housings of the MINI Countryman Untamed Edition are also finished in black, along with the roof and exterior mirror caps. The Piano Black Exterior option, included in the equipment range of the edition, adds to the black design features including the grille surround, headlights, taillights, side scuttles, door handles, tailpipe trims, model lettering and, when specified, the ALL4 emblems on the front side panels.

Like the door sills, the side scuttles feature a graphic pattern inspired by a mountain landscape and the "Untamed” inscription. Corresponding lettering is also featured on the rear side windows. In addition to the inlays and the carrier plates of the side scuttles, the E logo on the tailgate of the Plug-In Hybrid is also in Frozen Bluestone.

Nature-inspired shades of green and blue dominate the interior design for the MINI Countryman Untamed Edition. The exclusive Highland Green colour is combined with blue and green contrast stitching on the surfaces of the sports seats in the MINI Yours Leather Lounge finish. MINI Yours Leather Lounge Carbon Black trim is also available as an alternative. The illuminated decorative trim in Frozen Bluestone is printed with a landscape pattern which is similar to the door sill trims. For the first time, a large graphic is used as a motif in this area of the interior, instead of a uniform structure. The "Untamed" lettering is also visible in the night design. The accent strips in the cockpit and on the centre console are painted in metallic Frozen Blue, whilst the door trim strips are in metallic Arctic Silver and the surrounds of the air vents in high-gloss black.

In addition, the MINI Countryman edition model features emblems with the "Untamed" lettering on the seats and in the bottom spoke of the Nappa sports leather steering wheel, floor mats with a three-dimensionally embossed landscape pattern in the style of the door sills and decorative trims and an anthracite-coloured roof lining. The characteristic graphic of the mountain landscape also adorns the discreet pins in the outer area of the seat backs in a stylised form. The Untamed Edition for the MINI Countryman also includes the MINI Driving Modes.

What to watch out for

07-09-2017:

Report of MINI Countryman, new in April 2017, now with 2,200 miles and regularly garaged found to have wet carpets in both front footwells with mould around the edges of the rubber mats. Back to the dealer for investigation (we'd suspect blocked bulkhead vent well drains). Unfortunately dealer attempts to source the leak were initially unsuccessful.

25-02-2018:

Report of repeated failure of remote key of 2017/67 MINI Countryman firstly due to battery failure, secondly failed with new battery.

20-03-2018:

Some MINI Countryman PHEVs were delivered without their home charge cables, but this has now been rectified. (Reason was a problem with KLE Charge Control Units.)

26-01-2019:

Report of autonomous emergency brakes of 2018 MINI Countryman suddenly locking on and car skidding to the left. Apparently, steering wheel locked too. Might have been due to a bird flying across in front of the radar sensor.

09-07-2019:

Report of malfuctioning "driving assistant pack" in new April 2019 MINI Countryman, costing an extra £800 and bringing the cost of the (leased) car to £32,000. "From the beginning, these safety features proven to be faulty, useless and unsafe." Owner reported the issue to his local BMW MINI approved dealer who took it for inspection. In his words, "I was treated with utter contempt over several days and the car was returned, with no inspection paperwork, verbally declared no fault found." He asked BMW UK HQ and BMW Alphabet for standard videos showing how a driver would know these systems are performing - both point blank refused. He asked the same of the dealer who supplied the car, and the dealer who inspected the car; neither have done so. He sent BMW Alphabet a letter of rejection asking that they take car back. They insist he has the car inspected again by another dealer, or by a court approved independent assessor (they offered to cover cost if faults found), and refuse to do anything until he does. The car is supposed to have collision detection and avoidance systems for both vehicles and pedestrians. Owner believes this does not work at all. Car has active cruise control which is supposed to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead, intermittently it slows car down for no reason on empty roads, accelerates dangerously at cars in front, turns itself off. Owner subsequently had car inspected by Dunn Saw. All faults were demonstrated and Dunn Saw is writing a report. BMW then spoke to the owner afterwards and he is optimistic that a solution will be found.

29-08-2019:

Report of delivery of new MINI Countryman PHEV delayed due to faulty KLE Charge Control Unit that needed to be replaced before the customer could drive the car away.

26-10-2019:

Complaint of exaggerated problem reporting from satnav of 2018 MINI Countryman 1.5 DCT. Display "loves to show up two cones around a drain three miles ahead as a massive 'DANGER AHEAD' on the sat nav and, additionally putting a warning triangle relating to such an event in the main instrument display underneath the speedo. The first time this happened, I pulled over and consulted the hand-book as I thought there was a massive problem like low oil pressure."

03-01-2020:

Report of tempered glass panoramic sunroof of 2018 MINI Cooper Countryman shattering when the driver's door was slammed shut. BMW dealer investigated and advised that this was not a warranty issue and should be covered by insurance. They have estimated the total cost of replacement as £4696.

30-06-2020:

Report of yellow triangle service alert appearing on 2018 Countryman. The dealer service reception found a record of the alert on the key fob remote. The dealership now want to replace the steering wheel because of corrosion to connections.
