Classic cars - No change re black numberplates on post 1972 cars - Shedfulldofheaps

Hello, this is a heads up for owners of classic cars from the mid 70s.

The article below -

classics.honestjohn.co.uk/news/general-news/2015-0.../

relies on duff info given out by DVLA. The law about black numberplates has NOT changed. The introduction last year of a rolling VED exemption for vehicles aged forty years plus has NOT affected the numberplate rules, despite statements to the contrary on the DVLA website (reported in various classic car magazines and online fora).

See regs 10 and 18 of and Schedule 2 to the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001/561.

I add that I have emailed DVLA to point out that the DVLA website is misleading motorists and potentially exposing them to legal hassle. No reply as yet.

Many thanks. I'll let HJ know and I'm sure he'll check this.

This seems to be referring to Part 3 of Schedule II at the end of the regulation and covers white on black or silver on black plates that are allowed on vehicles first registered prior to 1973, but not subsequently. It Googles here: www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/pdfs/uksi_200...f A change in tax status of vehicles registered subsequently does not change these regulations.
