Thinking of my first suv and I like the XC60. In my 30s like the r design trim especially Luca r design with full leather. Want the 2.0 diesel £30 tax just wondering if anyone has any views, running costs , problems with these?

A friend of mine has had one for nearly 3 years on a PCP.

She can't wait for it to be over and get shot of the thing. Constant niggles and problems

Not for long methinks!. Small posh SUV's are the fastest growing market, so now the XC40 is out, the XC60 will soon be pushed into 2nd place.

Any ideas on mpg?

Depending on planned use - urban / extra-urban etc I'd guess low 30's around town and 40's over longer distances.

Likewise, my XC60 was dreadful, they are not without fault. There's a huge thread on the volvo forum about the D4 fwd having problems,

The V60 D5 I replaced mine with is a lot better in every respect.

Don't press the 'Turbo Boost' button. A Pontiac TransAm T-top it ain't.

Okay, they may have been pushing the cars to the extremes - but in both cases it looks like the aluminium engine mounts failed - the other two cars survived the abuse - now if you ask me - will these engine mounts survive hitting road cushions day-in, day-out for ten years? I wouldn't bet on it - sounds like an under-engineered part to me.

Unless you are hitting said road cushions at 50+mph it is entirely irrelevant.

You don’t need to hit road cushions at 50 to damage under engineered engine mounts.

Likewise the beauty of buying an SUV is to be able to take speed humps easier at a higher speed, if your Volvo has parts made of cheese I’m struggling to see the advantage.

I Have found most modern Volvos to be cramped inside, seems to run through the range both in the front of the car and in the passenger seats.

These types of cars are not purpose designed SUV's, they are the maker's standard cars made to look more substantial, and sometimes with a part time driven rear axle chucked on to aid on-road slippery weather progress, they are not built to take the punishment a purpose designed 4x4 will.

There's nothing wrong with that as such, because purpose designed 4x4's tend to be more agricultural, which not everyone wants.

The only car i've ever had an engine mounting break was on a Land Crab, itself some 10 years old at the time.

How do you know they are under engineered? Harris did things no normal user would do. It is probably engineered to take the worst abuse expected in normal use, over 150,000 or more miles.but apply absurd forces to metal, and it will fail. I can assure you the engine mounts are not made of cheese, or even hard cheese.

Cars with the D4 4-cylinder diesel (introduced in late 2013) have problems with the EGR cooler and valve. Volvo has been good at fixing these under warranty without quibbling.

I have two Volvo V60s in the past 6 years, and I liked them. If you're buying new, no problem. If you're buying used, I would strongly recommend that you ONLY buy from a Volvo main dealer and make sure that the car has a full Volvo service history. That will give you the strongest position if any problems crop up.
