Noticed website has had an update/refresh while the forum is still from the dark ages. How long will this continue? Perhaps I'm alone in thinking this way?

Just my own opinion, but the forum format is fine, works for me and doesn't need tinkering with.

I agree. It is irritating that when things are modernised 'improved' there are often problems.

Website update - nothing for forum - Engineer Andy

The forum still has issues with updated threads and posts not being listed as 'new', especially on the General Discussion section. Even now, one of the newest items (Seat Leon issue) is new to me (the thread is classed as 'new' to me), and yet only the last two posts are classed as 'new', despite me never reading tht thread before.

Something for the IT boffins to get their head around...

I did when it happened the last time when it happened across several of the boards. They seemed to partially fix it. Avant did, I think, pass on my concerns about this issue as well a while ago as well.

I keep well away from IT issues. Kalpesh (kalpesh@honestjohn.co.uk) is invariably helpful, but you'd need to explain to him what you mean by 'the dark ages', as I have no idea.

I don't regard trying to make out faint gold lettering against a navy blue background as an "improvement". It was always drummed into me that an appropriate contrast was required so that visual aids could easily be read. This is an example of how not to do it.

I don't see where this is on the HJ website I look at.

Thanks for this focussed.

What I get is not what I see on Windows XP + IE - (I wonder why?) but I see what I get on Windows 10 + Chrome!

You're partial to reams of in-forum photos and sprinklings of emojis, Trilogy? Not for me, thanks.

Trilogy, will you stop whingeing at me. I have provided an address for IT problems further up the thread.

Avant, I'm not whingeing at you. I posted the pistonheads link so you could see what I meant, that's all.

I agree, this forums format is as old as the dinosaurs.

It deffo needs a better layout. I mean if you hit reply to the wrong person, your new post could be between two very old posts and not at the end as it should be.

Website update - nothing for forum - argybargy

You can post stuff, people can reply to what you post, (or ignore it) and generally speaking it appears in some sort of rough chronological order. This grand old forum manages just fine without avatars, signatures and all the other superficial flannel that other groups allow. So what if some of the new wording is harder to read? Get a magnifying glass or sit in the dark.

Sorry, but with great respect some folks clearly have too much time on their hands.

Completely agree Argy, the forum is absolutely fine as it is.

If it ain't broke.......etc, etc!

I haven't noticed any changes and I don't see the need for any.

What am I missing?

I think some people previously asked for things like up and down votes, but to be honest, all that seems to encourage is:

  • People sucking up to others if they can get benefits on the site from doing so (some give 'premium' levels of access for free for the 'most popular/prolific posters' - not an issue here as its not a pay site or has different levels of membership [like a newspaper site]), and/or;
  • People deliberately down-voting people they disagree with, often for frivolous or personal reasons, artificially creating animosity between site members and encouraging trolling and flaming.

I'd rather stick with what we've got, perhaps with a few tweaks here and there, such as:

  1. A 'Go to top' button for threads;
  2. A 'preview' facility before posting;
  3. Having longer threads limited to (say) 25 posts on a page and splitting them up into multiple pages (does that save on computer memory use, especially when viewing the site on a phone or tablet?);
  4. Being able to view all your own posts via your membership page to more easily find one rather than via the general search facility.

Just some thoughts of mine.

Agree Andy, and needs to be more user friendly. Being able to post photos would be good, whenever original poster posts in a thread it's mentioned they're the original poster, not into emogies, number of posts a member has made and as has been mentioned in the past would be good to know what people's skills are etc.

I'm quite happy with the forum as it is.

Someone has suggested having "Up" and "Down" bottons. Well, I've got those on my PC!

I think my only comment would be about the fact that any change whatsoever to a post is shown as an "Edit". This does appear to be rather silly because, most of the time, all I've done is to make a very minor correction to my spelling or punctuation without making any actual change to the content of my post whatsover. However, it still shows up as an "Edit".

I agree with that. Being a bit OCD when it comes to my own grammar, I sometimes make minor changes to posts several times before being happy. "Edited by" looks like a failure, and is slightly embarrassing to someone like me who would rather get it right first time. Yes, its a hefty cross to bear.

Other than that, there's nothing wrong with this forum at all. In fact, its now slighly better for me because the irritating niggle of an old post of mine from April last year coming up every time I opened the HJ link has now gone.

I think the reason why full-sized photos aren't allowed on many forums is that they take up so much storage (which costs the site owner lots of extra money) and phyiscal space on the threads (lots more scrolling for everyone).

Some go for a middle ground, allowing small linked thumbnails of the photos, rather thn just a hyperlink to the image only on a file sharing site. That does cut down the extra storage space required, but may still encourage more people to post thumbnails.

Less of a problem on paid-for sites I suspect than free ones like this that are run as a goodwill guesture and to help people in the door so they can read content with ads, which is fair enough.

I think your last two suggestions definitely are useful - that sort of thing is quite common on other forums and is a reasonable guide to the expertise of posters. Of the two 'up' or 'down' votes, I'd pick the 'up' if i had to choose for the same reason - people are far more likely to be objective by thanking someone for a good post. Oddly enough, the 'like' facility is available here, but only on the HJ Agony column, although the result doesn't seem to be shown.
