2008 VW Polo 1.4 - Power Steering Failure - PX-230A
I called in to a shop after driving 6 miles earlier. When I came out and started the car, the yellow power steering light was on and the power steering isn't working. I also get a yellow flashing oil can light for a few seconds after startup. I'm getting these fault codes;

00562 - Sensor for oil level / temperature
01309 - Power steering control module

If I clear the faults they come back straight away. Power steering fluid level is fine, as is engine oil.

I'm confused as to how these faults have appeared together when they're separate surely?

I would take a look at the fuses in the cabin, driver side. Both of these may be on the same circuit. Possibly fuse #7.

Thanks for reply.

Fuse #7 had indeed blown. I have replaced it, but as soon as I start the car it blows again. Tried three fuses now.

What can I try next?

I would take a look under the car .Check the wiring to the oil level sensor. I have seem this rub out on the engine block or subframe. Also try disconnecting the level sensor,in the bottom of the engine sump.

So, I disconnect the sensor, fit a new fuse then see if it blows?

Also, whereabouts on the sump am I looking for the sensor...is it easy to find?

Sensor is right at the bottom.of the engine sump. Black 3 pin plug. disconnect it and try another fuse.

Disconnecting the oil level sensor made no difference and still blew fuses, so I plugged it back in.

The wire from the oil level sensor splits in two just above it and plugs into another sensor just below the air filter box...it looks like a plastic round disc. Anyway, I disconnected that and the power steering is now working.

No further error codes and runs fine, so not sure what the thing is I disconnected.

Code 65535 comes up intermittently (no lights on dash) but it has been for about a year.

I think it will probably be the Air Quality Sensor.

Does it look like this.

Yes it does! Although could it not be the MAF sensor?

Will leaving it disconnected affect anything?

It's strange that having it unplugged doesn't cause any codes to come up.

Unlikely to be an air quality sensor. This is only fitted to cars with climate control and is located in the heater air intake system by the wipers. If it were the maf sensor, the engine mil light would be on and you would be experiencing engine power problems. Can you remove the item and check for any part number? Do you have the 3 letter engine code? could be something like BBY It will be on the plastic cambelt cover, or in the boot,on a white label.

Looks like an electrical harmonic engine mounting. Can’t find any reference to this on the wiring diagram. I think I would leave it disconnected

Yes I think I will.

Whatever it is, disconnecting it has made no difference and hasn't thrown any codes up.
