Broadband and telephone providers - Trilogy.

We're with BT and feel I'm paying far too much. Wondering about moving to Plusnet. Has anyone had any experience with them or do people have other recommendations they're satisfied with?

Yep - I'm with them for both phone and ISP and have found them (despite being owned by BT) to be a MILE better in terms of customer service and price.

When I was with BT for my phone when I moved into my home over a decade ago, I had ongoing issues with them incorrectly billing me and their (IMHO) stupid quarterly way of billing that changed my bill every time, despite me always staying within the bounds of my deal.

I was with another ISP at that time, Eclipse, who were fine, but when I eventually got fed up with having to phone BT to get my bill altered on average once a month, I decided to change both to Plusnet as they were cheaper than Eclipse and offered the call package (evenings and weekends) I wanted.

Since the change, I only had to call Plusnet three times in over 5 years on generally minor issues which were resolved. The only issue I have with them is that their routers, at least for their standard (non-fibre) broadband services, aren't that great in terms of reliability - I had one replaced last year and the replacement has recently been faulty and requiring it to be rebooted on many occasions.

I would say they are good value, not the best, but good enough for me at the moment. I get a monthly bill via email, easy to use online account (better than BT's was when I changed over - it may have improved since then) and both are clear.

Plusnet regularly do really good offers for new customers - I also pay less now than I did when I started and have a better service. I would say that, in my view, they are like Richer Sounds, like electrical/AV store: there are better firms on the market, but you pay quite a bit more for the best phone/ISPs like Zen or get lower customer service for the other big names.

If you have cable available, it is worth getting a quote from Virgin - usually very fast broadband, we've been with them for years for TV, broadband, landline phone and mobile phone deals. We find them helpful and quick to respond to any problem.

Another vote for Virgin, but you do of course need to be in a cabled area.

We were in one of the first areas to be cabled and after almost 20 years wouldn't want to use anyone else.

We currently have a 100meg connection, but can have up to 300 if required. Gigabit isn't far away.

I'm an ex-BT employee and with Plusnet. No complaints and when I had a problem with my 'phone line Open Reach turned up and had to solve it in the exchange.

You do need to get quite forceful at the end of each year and re-negotiate your contract to maintain a reasonable charge.

Tried Virgin, terrible service. I understand Talk Talk has the worse customer reviews for the last five years, could be why they're so actively trying to sell it on my High Street.

That's essentially how I see the market at present. I know of friends and family who are with Virgin for landline and ISP/cable TV, and its a mixed bag - faster than BT if you're in an area upgraded to the really fast fibre services, customer service betwen fine and rather iffy. Also got reports of their equivalent (not the latest version, one from about 3-5 years ago) of the Sky box not being particularly good.

As regards the big name competitors, a quick look on USwitch, Which? magazine or other review sites shows that, like the gas/electric utility firms, most of the biggest names don't do that well overall on the service provided, whether its poor customer service, faults/reliability and/or unrealistic claims of system performance. It's noticeable that many of them regularly feature on BBC's Watchdog for such things.

The smaller, independent firms always do far better - though you do pay for it with higher charges. To be honest, it's why I prefer Plusnet, as they are one of the best value, reasonably reliable and aren't too bad for customer service. If money was no object, then I'd go for Zen or similar (as long as they provided a fast service).

I did renegotiate my contract with Plusnet about a year or so ago - like all firms, you do have to be firm (but polite) with them and know what the opposition is offering to give you leverage to push the price down, but it mostly works. It's best to do so when a competitor has a big offer on, so they can match or better it.

I was with Zen for a year, but it made no difference as broadband is only as good as the ultimate provider, in our case the egregious Openreach.

I went back to BT as it was a bit cheaper, and I avoided the hassle of having to change my Email address.

Thanks for all the feedback. Today a friend recommended EE. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of them? Their pricing is virtually identical to Plusnet.

Yes, strange that how most ISPs charge similar prices. Remind me someone of the meaning of the word cartel.

IMO, I think it depends where you are from the (how far away from the street box you are) until you get fibre to the house there will be a fluctuation in speed due to connection loss and wire temperature

I`m with sky fibre and its a steady 88mbs, some call it expensive but I find you get what you pay for, having tried BT- Virgin- and Talk Talk found them to be unreliable, and during the weekend totally useless with page loading taking ages on some days.

Bt then changed their price some time ago ie increased it, so as I had Sky TV tried fibre out, never had a problem, I think Sky are also going over to broadband TV as well so they can do away with the dish I think next year (some areas I think have already done this)

Son and daughter both use EE in Liverpool and Torpoint respectively and swear by it. Son's gaff is near city centre so may have good fibre infrastructure, doubt Torpont has anything more than here, Openreach only to and beyond exchange.

I've used both networks on their wi-fi and found them perfectly good for browsing etc. Never tried anything more demanding.

I'm following this thread with interest as I really need to move on from current set up of Talk Talk landline and Demon internet via ADSL. Demon is now Vodafone owned and brand no longer actively promoted. While I find the speeds etc acceptable Mrs B does not (she struggles more than me in other places eg the public wi-fi on Caravan and Motorhome club sites.

Fibre to cabinet is available so we may try that.

EE, i've been with Orange (now EE) as mobile provider more or less since they started, and have stayed with them for broadband.

We have recently transferred onto their faster broadband (there is a name for this but it eludes me) and checking the speeds it has indeed tripled in speed.

Whenever there has been a problem, rare it must be said, they have been helpful, more so recently as by the sounds of things and the efficiency at the other end the operator is in Britain or Ireland...there was a period when it was obvious the calls were going to India, generally a frustrating and pointless call.

Decent to deal with at renewal times, they always offer a package to keep me happy, better deals renewing by phone call and not online and definately not at the shops and definately not by dealing with one of the wide boys who used to ring out of the blue just before contract renewal pretending to be from Orange themselves.

I have mobile and now the fast broadband, the mobile is a sim only package with unlimited calls and texts and 1gig data as i recall, by buying the faster broadband they chuck a bonus 5gig onto the mobile data.

There is cheaper out there and when i retire that may be an issue to consider, but for the time being i have no intentions of going elsewhere, i did wonder if EE would be as good as Orange but in some ways (ie calls to them) it's improved as far as i can tell.

I use EE mobile broadband when we're out with the tin tent - they have the most coverage although some place inevitably have no signal - only had to use their customer services once, they were very helpful and gave me the information I needed to fix the settings.

I use Plusnet for my home broadband and mobile phone, they're very good - much better than Talktalk I used before for home broadband, the line was always dropping out and needing manual rebooting of the router, the problem was never fixed despite a chargeable home visit.

Our original mobiles were on T-mobile, nothing good or bad to report.
