Hyundai i20 - Wheel wobble fixed. Lasts 100 miles..... - Vast

Baffling me and the local wheel balancing community. Any thoughts most welcome and much appreciated.

I20 (63 plate) developed a wheel wobble around 50mph. Had the front wheels balanced and problem solved. Around 100 miles later, wobble returns. The wobble can be felt through the car. Ive never driven it (my wifes) but as a passenger its worrying. Cant imagine what its like to drive !

Have repeated the above process 4 or 5 times and changed wheels front to back at the last balance, but still 100-150 miles later the wobble returns.

The second time we did a balance, the operative put on weights that went about a 1/4 to 1/3 around the inside of the rim. Never seen so many. Id guess 15 to 20 weights.

The next balancer was at a different garage and the top man/owner. He was equally surprised by the number of weights. He removed them, balanced the wheels (with far fewer weights) and as usual, all was well for a few days.

Any ideas as to a logical explanation for this illogical occurrence ? Taking the car in next week, so any thoughts I can pass onto the garage might help solve the mystery.

Many thanks in anticipation..

So does the wobble return to the same wheel when swapped to the rear or the same corner of the car whichever wheel is fitted there?

If it's one particular wheel wherever its fitted then its more than likely a faulty and deteriorating tyre, i would get the tyre lads to run the wheel alone up on the balancer just to make sure you don't have a bucked or faulty wheel and only fit another tyre...could you make use of the spare tyre if its full size for testing purposes.

15/20 weights on one particular wheel is obvious to anyone either the tyre or wheel is faulty.

Hi..Its not had puncture repair gunk put in the tyre at some point, and a chunk of it is moving about inside the tyre and changing the balance of the wheel.....just a thought.

Is your wife in the habit of driving up a kerb, perhaps when visiting a friend/relative?

She is drawn to potholes like a moth to the moon, but Im assured that the wobble isn't a result of potholing or curbing. We have purchased many an alloy rim over the years and a drivers door, which was left slightly open by the roadside, to be sucked open and removed by a concrete lorry... I could go on.......

Dont think so but appreciate your reply. Was talked into putting that stuff in my motorcycle tyres before a trip to Europe. Anything over 85 mph (abroad of course) and the front end was all over the place. I then had a puncture and it covered my bike in gunk....

Thanks for your response... Don't know if its the same wheel. I also suspect it may be a tyre. I seem to remember on one of our balancing outings, the fitter commenting on how difficult the tyres its shod with (no idea what they are) is to balance....

If the tread is out of line in a small area it wont matter which hub its on it will have the same effect, I would check the tyre tread for all round alignment, apart from that a damaged sidewall will do the same thing as its flexing more than it should throwing the balance out...

"to be sucked open and removed by a concrete lorry..."

That's unusual. Lorries are usually made of metal.
