2005 Golf SDI - Mk5 Golf Sdi - Not Starting - Relay 458? - Cormac

I'm new to this forum, hoping one of you kind souls can help me out :-)

I was driving home on Saturday night when my 2005 Mk 5 SDI golf stopped and wouldn't start again. When i tried to start it the cooling fans randomly came on.

I completed an fault code scan and got: 18009: Relay for supply voltage terminal 30 (j317): Implausible signal: P1601

Next morning the car started up but then died after a few minutes, relay 458 then started clicking repeatedly and the cooling fans came on again. When i tried to start the car again it turned over as usual but wouldn't fire.

I went to VW and ordered a new relay 458 but it wont be here until tomorrow, i got a 2nd hand one at the scrappy but it hasn't cured the issue.

The car isn't starting atall now.

Is this a common issue, can someone point me in the right direction?

I would not say this is a common issue,but there are lots of things that can cause this problem,Fusebox,engine control unit or bad wiring are a few that spring to mind.Without any test equipt or wiring diagram,I think you will struggle to fix this yourself.hth

Thanks for the reply.

I spent yesterday working on car. I found that five f8 which controls EGR/inlet manifold flap had broken blades, this May have been causing clicking sound in the relay.

I replaced fuse and the car started but kept cutting out after a few minutes. I scanned codes and now got a few relating to the EGR and inlet flap. I removed the inlet pipe and the flap was closed, when I started car and switched car off the flap remained open. I think that the inlet flap is now my issue.

I will replace flap and then post up an update.

Replaced flap, still no good,

Car starts and runs for a minute, then stops, relay 458 starts clicking and the cooling fabs scone on at a low speed but car won't restart. On the dash a combination of the glow plug light and ecu intermittently flicker. If I try to read codes I get a link error.

If I remove fuse f8 the clicking stops and the car will fun fine. No fault codes are stored when I rescan.

So this issue looks to be either the wiring from fuse f8 to relay or an ecu issue.

I'm stumped, what do you guys think?

Fuse #8 also controls the cooling fan circuit.Check the wiring where it runs down the left of the radiator (pass side)to see if has rubbed on the fan blades.You could aslo try disconnecting the fans/control unit assembly from the large multiplug ,also on the left side of radiator.hth

Disconnected fans but no difference

Do you know where the feed to fuse 8 comes from? ECU ? Also what voltage should be coming through?

can you post the 3 letter engine code?It can be found on the plastic cam belt cover or on the label in the spare wheel well.I would think this is a bdk type.All the fuses are 12 volt.The fuse 8 is supplied from the main engine bay fuse box and does not power the engine ecu.h.th

Engine code is aabdkx0

Some more testing done tonight, after fitting the replacement inlet flap I noticed that the butterfly still doesn't move when the car is started and stopped.

With fuse f8 intact and and relay clicking it seems that there is no power to the ecu, the reason I say this is that the engine management light is out on dash, if I pull fuse f8 then the management light comes on again.

Fuse f8 is reading 6 volts

Starting to think this is an ECU issue

You should have 12v on fuse 8 so if you only have 6v there must be a poor conexion somewhere.

Elecki said this was fed from the engine bay fuse box so there must be be a problem between the two fuseboxes, most likely at one end or other. Have a good look for loose or burnt conexions.

Hi ive read this thread and sorry to butt in but did u manage to solve this problem? Oir mk5 04 golf has done the same, and been to a mechanic and he cant work out the problem.. if any help is given wed be much appreciated. ?

Hi, I have the same problem with my 2004 VW touran tdi, I got water in the fuse box, the the egr flap started going crazy. have had the ecu check etc, its come back as OK. the engine cranks over but not fireing, there appears to be no power to the fuel pump. have swapped relay 458 but still no good, any ideas would be appreciated. thanks in anticipation.
