I saw a new South Yorks traffic car today: a C class Merc 270 CDI. They've also fairly recently acquired a 5 series. Are the V70s going out of fashion? An officer friend says he and his colleagues quite like them, but that view is not widely held. Are there any more interesting cars out there?
O
(self-confessed police car fan - except when being pulled over!)

Once saw a Porsche 968CS on the M3. White and semi-batenburg (sp?) but no lights on top.
Also believe that there was a Lotus Esprit Turbo somewhere.

Well of course they're going for more exotic machinery these days. They have control of their own budgets and can squander at will. In Cambs. they wanted to increase the police element of the council tax by a whopping 28%! Eventually this was trimmed back to a still not insignificant 19.2%.
Personnaly I'd shovel them all out of cars and back on to foot.
They're not known as "plod" for nothing.

Could be the re-sale value at last dawning on them. The Volvo's are ok but they must lose a shed load on the RRs and Discos.
This will be bad news for some. If you were pursued by a Land Rover you always had a chance of it breaking down! (I say that as a Landy owner.)

See Police Car Auction Report in the news archive. They don't get Range Rovers gone until after 160k and they were still fetching £6k +.

HJ,
Did you see what that beat up old Range Rover went for on Wednesday, I missed it ? It was about 20 years old.

Nth Yorks have Imprezas for chasing hillbillies along twisty Dales roads. But they were famous as a Force for only allowing their patrol cars to do a few miles a day to save on fuel - a sort of reverse of that old one about "sorry officer, I was speeding because I had to get to the petrol station before I ran out of gas"
|
In answer to Mark, no, missed it. Sorry.

not quite as different as a merc or porsche, but i so a mistbushi evo6 a few months ago, can't remember where!

As I recall, some of these are Prodrive prepared with forest rally spec suspension. It's so they can drive up kerbs and across country to keep up with the scum who don't care how much damage they do to their stolen machine. Some also have rally engines so they can keep up with 'ordinary' scoobys and the like.
If you ask me they should fit sidewinders and blow the scum off the road.

Blimey HJ, mine would be on it's third engine by then!

Anyone remember police Daimler SP250 Darts on the North Circular in the early '60's?
|
|
Reminds me I made a trip to North Yorks in January via M1 and was amazed to see the number of cars being stopped on the very North bit of the M1 by Traffic cars. I saw more in that bit of the world than the rest of England put together. Each patrol car seemed to be a different make and model. Seems a bit more hands on up there.

On the M20 they are using an un-marked, dark colour, Skoda for christ sake. Not being an expert on Skoda's it is a 4 door about the size of a Vectra with 4 plod inside.
|
|
Almost fell foul to a sneaky Skoda myself this afternoon. Durham plod are using at least one unmarked silver Octavia diesel. Fortunately I spotted his epaulettes (oooh errr missus!) before I could do any damage. Followed me for a good couple of miles though, up a cul-de-sac, onto my drive, then just stared at me for a minute. I'd like to think that he was just making sure I lived at the address and not pee'd off having to drive the Skoda, but I'm not convinced

Yes I do remember these also used by the Kent police after a spell after the war with TC MGs

Does anyone remember which force used to run a Ford RS 200?

Does anyone remember which force used to run a Ford RS 200?
Not sure but Northumberland used to have a Ford Escort Cosworth, specially rally-spec modified to combat excessive car theft.
|
|
Humberside ran the Cosworth Escort, slightly modified in the suspension department, as part of a Vehicle Crime Unit established to combat the excessive vehicle theft figures at the time. It was replaced by the first Police Impretza (as pictured a few weeks ago in the Motoring Telegraph). Again it was slightly tweeked, nothing too drastic.

Essex ran the RS200 but not for long - got trashed.

Late Seventies, Tottenham Court road, unmarked Triumph 2.5PI in Red Oxide!! 4 heavies inside, 1 in a camel coat. Sweeney or what?

Birmingham Traffic always moaned about losing their Austin Westminster 6/110.'s. They had been heavily breathed on and were a sight to behold on full chat along A452 or A45

I remember the Darts - also remember an Autocar cartoon of 4 coppers in a Mini with 4 bumps in its roof to accomodate their helmets!
There is a plain red Accord type R down in North Wilts - there was a Honda SP1 'bike at the Motorshow (in chequered livery, though you'd be hard pressed to spot that in your mirrors!)
