Ford first service/warranty - Tony44
A hypothetical question:

If the service/warranty document states that a first service should be carried out at 12,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, how much leaway is there? In other words, if the mileage went over the 12,500 miles before the 12 months was up, how much 'extra' mileage could one clock up without invalidating the warranty?

Thanks,
Tony

None.

So 12,500 is 'maximum' and a service at, say, 12,700 would invalidate the three year warranty?

I asked this question of the nissan dealer when i had the primera, he told me there was a 500 mile leeway
Ford first service/warranty - JamesH
According to my Fiesta's warranty booklet, there was a +/- 1,000 mile or one month leeway. However, this was back in 2000 when the second and third year warranty were optional.

It could well have changed by now. It may say in your warranty book whether there is any leeway. If there's no mention of it then I would take HJ's advice to be on the safe side.

I've just checked the service book on a micra which I bought a year ago, it's registered 27 March 2000, the first service was done on 15 May 2001 and the second 1st Feb 2002, so do you think that the Nissan warranty would not be valid due to late first service? It's very low mileage and had done 7000 miles at first service.

What I said. You're in breach of the terms of the warranty. You have no entitlement to anything. If the dealer or the manufacturer choose to give you something, that's fine, but you have no right to it and either could withdraw that offer or deny it at any time.

If my experience is anything to go by then the Ford dealer will be unable to make up his mind about the service interval anyway. I have an early TDCi Focus and the handbooks say 10k and 12.5k service intervals depending on where you look (I now know it's 12.5k).

Best to plan ahead and get the services done just before 12.5k

My father in law bought a new Mondeo in 2000. Because the car was in for other work he asked them to service it at a mere 10k, ie early. They said that would invalidate the warranty too. So he rang Ford and they confirmed that.

There has to be SOME leeway otherwise you'd be cruising up and down outside the dealer with 12497, 12498, blow, not quite there, must go past again...

The sevice interval for my 2000 Mondeo is given in the service booklet as 10,000 miles or 12 months. The first time I telephoned my local Ford Main Dealer to arrange a first service they informed me that the service interval had now been revised to 12,500 miles "for all Mondeo's".

Fortunately, I checked this with Ford themselves, who assured me that it was still 10,000 miles for my particular car. So much for main dealers, eh! I think they make it up as they go along!

You have +/- 1000 miles in which to have the service carried out and still maintain the warranty.

Can't believe that over-servicing can invalidate a warranty: sounds like a "jobsworth" situation to me!!!

Splodgeface,

It does, indeed, sound like a "jobsworth" situation to me as well.

However, I would guess that if you were to have one service done at 10,000 and another one done at 12,500 then there would be very little Ford or the main dealer could do about it!

Just prohibitively expensive, that's all!

Not to mention that if you were a European customer, your service interval would be the metric equivalent of 10,000 miles or whatever, rounded to a suitable number that sounded acceptable! So,there would have to be a reasonable allowance, say =/- 5% within which they could not argue you hadn't met the requirements.

Service books are usually marked up in both km and miles, with a pretty close tolerance.

That said, the warranty is offered by the UK agent of the manufacturer (usually a wholly owned subsidiary of the manufacturer) rather than the manufacturer themselves. So if they choose to operate different standards in different countries, they are well within their rights to do so.

I suspect it's different now that Pan-European warranties have to be offered in all EU states, but for cars purchased before this was introduced you will still have this anomaly.

Just to add to the above.

If you go into a Ford dealership and buy a Mondeo, you are purchasing a car from the dealer who in turn pays Ford Motor Company Limited (the uk agent) for the goods. Although the warranty is offered by FMCL, the car was actually manufactured by Ford Motor Company's Belgium subsidiary, who in turn are paid by FMCL (uk).

Confused? You will be after this weeks exciting episode of....

Which was why he rang Ford UK to confirm, and that it was indeed apparently the case.

The Ford Ka has a 1,000 mile leeway on 10K service intervals. Thus you can get the first service done at 10,999 miles. Mine was done at ~10,700. Not sure what happens later i.e. 20,995 or mileage at last service + 10,999.

So, if, regarding the "danger" of over-servicing, if you were to change the engine (and maybe gearbox) oil yourself at the first 6000 miles, as HJ recommends (i.e. before the official service is due), you are in danger of invalidating your warranty.

If so, I suppose it's worth "keeping quiet" about your over-servicing.

Phoned Ford Customer Relations today. Was told that "would probably be a 1,000 mile/1 month allowance, but ask your local dealer's service department to contact the Ford warranty department to confirm - unfortunately there is no public telephone number for them."

Can't find anything in the handbook etc. Under normal circumstances I would go with HJ and others who have said to get it serviced *before* the 12500/12 months deadline. Will nevertheless try to find out more via the local dealer.

Slightly O/T, I asked today at Rapidfit how much they charge for a service, £80, and they even do the sparks. But because they don't follow the Ford schedule exactly they won't stamp the service book. :(

Think I may get the first one done at the delaer and then move to RapidFit.

Without any prompting - simply asked "Car due for first service at 12,500 miles, but I won't be able to get it into dealer on time", was told that "there is a 1,000 mile leaway".

Pity it isn't written down somewhere in black and white though
;-)

Tony44,

It is written down, at least for myself, in the Ford Extended Warranty documents for the second and third year of the warranty.

I have a feeling it isn't actually mentioned in the handbook or service, though, for some strange reason.
