New Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDi review - brum

Even giving a journalist a great little expenses paid holiday in Portugal, didnt guarantee a completely critisism free review. Reading between the lines, its too expensive, and the 3 pot diesel drives much like err...well...a vw 3 pot diesel, prone to stalling in eu induced fashion.....

We get to check it out next week.

I read the article and came away with different impressions:

1. The journalist was a sloppy driver, stalling a car which has an engine lauded for its low down torque and suiability as a city car.

2. The diesel engine is not unpleasant to the ear under hard acceleration, with the distinctive thrum of a three-pot seemingly overriding the traditional diesel clatter. That doesn't sound like any kind of deprecatory remark, just that it sounds like a 3 cyl diesel. No indication that the engine drives any differently to any other small diesel and that VAG 3 cyl diesels are distinctly different to drive.

3. Expensive? Spec a Corsa to the same level and it comes in at around £15,900.

The corsa will be discounted to the hills, the Fabia will not.

The corsa will be discounted to the hills, the Fabia will not.

A bold statement for a car which isn't due to be released in UK until next year.

Currently the discount for a Corsa and a Fabia is identaical on DTD.

Can't believe how cheap and nasty some of that interior looks. Skoda carpets hve no right to be called carpets.

And it's not exactly cheap is it? A lot of overlap with the Polo and even the Audi A1. Too much for what it is in my opinion.

When the Polo, A1 and Ibiza get the MQB subframes they will be priced accordingly, with the A1 and Polo at a higher level than the Fabia and Ibiza. VAG deliberately structures its trim levels. For example, Skodas and SEATs are not allowed to have velour lined gloveboxes. Audis and VWs are allowed to have them to increase the perception of quality in what is basically the same car.

And all the plastic in the boot to get scuffed/scratched reminds be of the interior of a Felicia.
