How Temperature Control in your car works
My first car was an '84 BMW 318i. It had a brilliantly simple, yet effective, air control system. Three sliders: left is open, right is closed. mileage calculator

Top is defrost vents, middle is cabin vents, bottom is floor vents. You could blend them any way you want, to get a perfect mix of air/heat just where you wanted it.
Best of all, you could keep just a little going on the defrost to clear the window, while keeping most on your chest or feet.
