Hi,

Hope some guru can help.

Just bought a 2012 Peugeot Partner 1.6 92 hdi.

Sadly it's got a problem in 5th gear.

There is a vibration/ rattle seemingly coming from around the gearstick when the accelerator is pressed which goes away when released..

The noise also goes away if you move the gearstick to the right when in gear.

No rattle in any other gear.

There is also some movementbin the gearstick upon acceleration but not enough to make it pop out of gear.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Can be a weak point on these boxes,

5th gear and the bearing sits up pretty high inside the box so oil levels are criticul.

Wear on the selector/syncro and bearing can result.

Get the oil level checked.

Thanks for the reply.

So a low oil level could be the problem, would simply refilling it fix it or would you say there will be damage?

It was an ex daily lease vehicle so I'm fearing the worse.

Sorry but my experience is the damage is usually done.

But you have to make sure.

A ggod mechanic can listen to the end of the box and be sure.

But if it is so and your lucky and find well equiped garage it is possible to remove the offending bearing without removing the box!

But these days it's rare to even find a mechanic that will open up a gearbox.

I did have some success years ago "lessening" differential noise on a gear box using Molyslip gearbox addative.

Whether this will work?

Oh dear, that doesn't sound like a cheap fix.

On a side note, and just in case it produces a happier diagnosis, I took tge gearlever gaitor off earlier and went for a drive.

What i can see from the gear stick is that it has two arms/rods with ball and socket type fixings at the top. As you move through the gears these rods move up and down and side to side.

When fifth gear is selected, the lower of the two rods vibrate which causes the rattle. If you twist the rod at the ball and socket end it completely removes any noise.

It may very well be the case that what you have described would cause the rod to vibrate but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

That does sound like bearing vibration from what Peugeot call the second line bearing.

Us older people would say the layshaft.

The bearing sits at the end of the shaft directly under the 5th gear.

But get it checked by a pro mechanic first.

don't go borrowing grief!

Even draining and refilling with 2 litres and addative would be probably around £45+ from a garage .

An Ebay rebuilt unit is around £650 plus fitting.

Get it checked first.

Just 56,000 miles. That said it was a day hire van.
