My freind is selling his Golf 4-Motion 2.8 and wants to know what he should ask for it. The garages don't want to offer more than £10,000 for it but he paid £24,000 for it under 3yrs ago.

Age, mileage, condition please?

They are not very good cars, with some problem areas such as the self-levelling headlights. Not a patch on the R32 they were developed into. That's why there's no premium on them.

The car is nearly 3rs old, 20,000 miles on the clock and is immaculate inside and out.

Sorry to say that in all hoesty this one's a bit of a slug. I drove one of these for a short while a year or so ago and while the image is all there the performance was curiously disappointing and the handling surprisingly soft. Pretty heavy on juice, too, and I seriously wonder about high mileage cost/reliability.
If buyers have those suspicions then dealers will want to offer below book as they're not sure of shifting them.
Basic problem is that there are too many compact performance cars which do a much better job than the 4 Motion.

Privately, I would say the car is worth about £12,500, so £10k trade sounds about right to me.
The R32 has taken the edge off the car's desirability and brand new imports are about £17k and, to be honest, I really have no idea who's buying them even at that money.
In any case, £10k is 42% retained value after three years, which actually isn't disastrous and if a £17k import could do that, would be very good going indeed.
