Ford Focus MK1 heater box failure - Trilogy.

The heater box of my 2003 MK1 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec, which I was about to advertise to sell, has failed. This car has air conditioning. Does anyone know how long it takes to fit another heater box? I think buying a new part will be too expensive so would go used instead.

There are a lot of components in a heater box. Which part has failed? To replace the complete heater box is around 6-8 hours.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I don't know. The heater will only blow lukewarm air at best. My garage have spent an 1.5 hours trying to find out what's up and say it needs a new heater box.

If it is only blowing luke warm,then it is possible that the heater matrix is blocked. This is a fairly easy job and does not need the heater box replacing. Takes about 1-1.5 hours. Access to matrix is forward of the gear lever, in front of the centre console.

I've spoken to the lad who worked on it. He's said they don't have much joy with unblocking heater matrixs, whatever that's supposed to mean. I might just advertise stating heater only blows lukewarm. If it was summer it wouldn't really be an issue. Need to sell as bought T5 Transporter to replace it. It's too good to scrap.

I've had good results in the past with flushing the matrix in reverse,

fairly easy to do,

just identify the inlet pipe and then disconnect both inlet and outlet pipes.

then run a garden hose into the outlet pipe and run the hose for as long as possible before you get bored/impatient.

no engine on for this and just let the water run out onto the ground.

If it can be cleared this will most likely work.

Would the use of a Coolant Cleaner help ? something like Holts Speedflush, ? probably the cheapest option, it might clear the blockage that is reducing the heater output, follow the instructions, refill and flush a couple of times to clear out the debris then refill with fresh ford antifreeze & distilled wayer 50/50 mix
