New model Toyota Corolla mpg - Godfrey H {P}
I was just wondering what real life mpg people get from the new model Toyota Corolla with the 1.6 petrol engine?

I got 34mpg. See road test on this website.

Thanks HJ I read the road test but I was just wondering what owners got long term. For instance my Honda Civic varies between 35 and 40 mpg depending on what sort of driving I do. It has never dropped below 35 and neither have I been able to crack more than 40 mpg adopting a normal (i.e. not economy run) driving style.

My father has a 1.6 T2 without A/C.

He is no slouch, but doesn't do rush hour stop start crawling and he gets a very consistent 40 mpg.

The onboard computer optimisticly states 43 - 45 mpg, but Dad measures it the old fashioned way by brimming the tank.

I have driven the car and it is an excellent all rounder, just a bit buzzy on the motorway.

Been 100% reliable, ofcourse.

Thanks Woody that's just the sort of information I was looking for.

Had you considered the diesel?

New model Toyota Corolla mpg - Godfrey H {P}
Yes KB I had thought about it, but the cheaper diesel is only 89 bhp and I don't think I could live with that. The reason I asked the question was that the only long term tests I have come across were by muttering wroters doing a daily stop start commute across Sarth London and reporting 34 mpg. I'm not interested in ultimate fuel economy but 34 mpg is a bit too low even for me.

89bhp is underpowered in a petrol car, but diesels are all about the mid range. The 1.6 petrol has 109 bhp but will probably deliver that at about 5500 rpm and much less around the 3000 rpm mark. The diesel on the other hand will probably be more powerful lower down as it has an extra 50 ft lbs of torque, so unless you're into traffic light derbys it will probably feel just as quick in the real world.

My mum got a new T2 diesel(89 bhp) Corrolla several months ago to replace her Golf TDi. Maybe the quality of materials isn't as good as the Golf but its a better car to drive. Very quick and ultra economical (52 mpg)- its a super car. We sold her car privately and bought the Corrolla new at a main UK dealer for £11300 including met paint and alloys. VW wanted £14000 for a new Golf Match with soggy suspension.

Has anyone got any views on the 1.4 T2? It seems to be available from online brokers at quite a good price.

Maybe worth trying a diesel perhaps, Godfrey? I believe I saw something in this months What Car? suggesting the Corolla Verso was better than most at holding it's money. Have a look.

My D4D diesel Yaris has a cracking little engine. Wouldn't go back to petrol unless we needed an auto one. My Mrs gets 55 - 58 going to work and back over mixed driving. Pleases me greatly to fill up with derv knowing how long it'll be till the next time.

Well I'll give a diesel a spin if the dealer has a demonstrator. As I said before I'm not looking for ultimate economy but on the other hand I don't want anything less economical than the Honda I have at the moment. A fly in the ointment is that the very well thought of dealer who had the Toyota franchise no longer has it. I presume a new dealer with an expensive plate glass and chrome showroom will emerge shortly, which seems to be trend
round here. It seems all the different manufacturers are hell bent on getting rid of the smaller well respected local firms.

Godfrey, you might want to consider a Seat Leon/Toledo TDi in SE trim. 110 bhp with peak torque at less than 2000 rpm, low insurance rates, plenty of kit and mid-fifties economy. Handles far better than VW equivalent as well.

I am quite tall and can't get comfortable in a Leon. I am also concerned that VW group has lost the plot when it comes to build quality.
New model Toyota Corolla mpg - andymc {P}
Wow, you must be very tall! I'm 5'10" and even with the seat adjustment at its highest setting I still have loads of headroom.
I'd say you're probably right about the build quality of VW's having deteriorated, but I don't think it holds true for the whole of the VW group - Seats and Skodas seem to be pretty well screwed together, ironically enough considering they're supposed to be in the budget end of the group's offerings. Still, horses for courses - hope you find a car you're happy with.

I'm 6ft tall but the problem is all my height comes from the waist upwards which means with the seat on its lowest setting I end up looking at the sun visor. It's a blooming nuisance as it rules out quite a lot of cars.

I have about 3000kms on my 1.6 T3 3door now and I get an average of 43 mpg (according to the computer ). This is on a good mix of the commuting crawl and motorways . I'm very pleased with it , far superior to its predecessor , a 1.6 old-shape (98) Corolla . DeeJay .
New model Toyota Corolla mpg - Godfrey H {P}
Thanks DeeJay you do the same type of motoring that I do. I just wonder about the accuracy of the fuel computer though. Have you tried cross-checking it against the traditional method of brimming the tank?
