Historic driving fine from Italy - DieselBoy

Back in 2004 I hired a car in Tuscany. Months and months later I received notification from Avis that I would receive a traffic regulation infringement fine from the authorities, and my credit card was being charged x amount as an admin fee. I never received anything further and nothing was charged to my credit card.

We've returned to Italy twice since, although haven't hired a car.

This summer we're going on holiday to Tuscany, and I'm hiring a car.

Should I be concerned I'll end up in an Italian cell?!

Worried DB.

No, not a chance of it coming back to you. It's 15 years ago!

"No, not a chance of it coming back to you. It's 15 years ago!"

That was my first thought too, but you never know!

From what I recall, it was a Traffic Order infringement in Florence. That in itself is a joke - as far as I could work out, there was little to no order in the first place.

Use your phone call. I think you are allowed one (at least you are in the movies.)

(Normally I think you are expected to use it to call your lawyer, but you can get legal advice here.)

I think it's unlikely. It's 15 year ago, and Avis could have made the mistake of mixing you up with another customer.

However, when you go this summer, I would read up on whether any towns you plan to visit might have congestion zones or charges: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/125952/i-have-received-8500-fines-for-driving-in-a-congestion-zone-in-italy---what-do-i-do-

Last time I drove in Tuscany, the only worry was where to park ...

You can park at the airport, it’s relatively cheap and pretty close to the centre so plenty of taxis at a reasonable price.

Well, so far so good. Picked the hire car up from Centauro at Pisa airport on Monday. The queue for the shuttle bus was horrific, as was the queue for booking out the car. No arguments when I told them I had excess insurance and they even rewarded my 'good custom' with a 'upgrade' from a Pug 308/ VW Golf to a Ford Ecosport. Not an upgrade in my book, but there you go. It's a 1.0 EcoBoost thing. Goes well enough. Tiny boot but managed to fit all our luggage in with some reverse jenga skills. 2 hour drive to our home for the week and it's not a bad wee car.

I'd forgotten how mad Italian drivers are. They'll think nothing of overtaking in the most dangerous place just to get a car ahead, and then turn off a mile later. Speed limits seem to be enforced mainly by camera - hopefully I haven't fallen foul yet.

Pleased that as of yet, I haven't been arrested! In fact, the hire place only took a cursory look at my photocard licence, not even sure they took the number!

I have a parking fine of similar vintage in Chartres. I'd actually paid/displayed but suspect warden didn't look in right place for ticket assuming it was the insurance thing French cars display in lower right of windscreen. Avoided returning to Chartres with same car but as we changed it witihn 18 months that wasn't a great imposition!!

I have hired cars many times from Pisa . During peak season the shuttle to the rental park is a farce and often end up walking . Be warned about refuelling at the airport petrol station . It is a pre pay , and if paying with cash , it does not give change .

I unknowingly drove into the "limited access" part of an Italian city centre without a valid permit in a hire car about 6 or 7 years ago, (I had no idea I had done this). This was in August.

In January if the following year, I received a fine from the city authorities for approx. €120 IIRC, (it had not come from the hire car company, but direct from the city authority).

The letter was sent recorded delivery, but our postie had simply put it through the letterbox.

The fine included a unique website address that (allegedly) showed me in the car at the time. I chose NOT to visit this website, as that would have alerted the sending party that I had received the fine (they know when you have visited a particular page).

I put the letter through the shredder and have hired cars in Italy many many times since without any repercussion (although I was slightly nervous the first time I hired a car about six months afterwards as it was also at the same airport).
