There is precisely one big bumper one in AutoTrader that is not obviously a wreck for anything like your budget.
Great cars but anything sub £1k is almost certain to have been thrashed, modified, neglected or otherwise abused. They're tough but even the newest are twelve years old so they're not invincible.
You might find one for your budget, but look hard, be fussy, and don't take just anything because it's a GTi.

im not intrested in JUST the gti, although its preferred due to being injected, the 1.6 driver would be of intrest, it has to be fairly powerful for motorways and its going to be hauling a lot of weight most of the time, with the boot being huge, this helps :)

The 140k mile 86C Jetta GT I gave to a west Country Reverand last November passed its MOT with flying colours in January and is still driving around with a halo over its roof. They go through a bad patch but once they're sorted they go on and on. Earlier cars: 85's to 87's seem to be painted better and are more rust resistant than those from '88 on when they switched the wipers across and put a badge in the centre of the back.

Hi Woosey
I'm also looking at Mk 2 Golfs at the moment. I want something as a project. Have also considered a Mini but having owned 4, am well aware of rust bucket status! IMO, the Mk 2 must be one of the finest cars VW ever produced. I'm looking at Gtis but with the obvious drawback of insuring it as a second car on my insurance policy! All the caveats apply to the GTi so I'm taking my time until the right one comes along. I had a MK 2 1.6 for 5 years with no serious probs but a few minor ones.
There are plenty of Golf forums about but many are given over to the custom car brigade. I'm looking for an absolutely standard late 80s model, 8 valve. Price seems to be based entirely on condition but I hope to secure something for between £500 to £700ish. As has been said, they're an old car now, so old car rules apply. It's not a rare classic as there are thousands about but I have a feeling that prices have bottomed and may start climbing for mint examples. Good luck

In March I traded in my completely original (except for a CD player - I still have the original Panasonic radio cassette somewhere) 1990 big bumper Mk2 GTI when buying a new shape SEAT Ibiza. It had 144,000 miles on the clock, full service history, all MOT certificates and enough receipts to please even Gregory P as to the validity of the service record.
The SEAT dealer gave me £500 for it and when I went to pick up the Ibiza the servicing manager of the SEAT dealer was checking it over with a view to keeping it himself. I think that the head gasket may have been on the way out but other than that it went fine, just didn't have power steering and my wife got fed up with it.
There's not many unmolested ones left for under a grand. Brilliant car though.

No, not that one.

As the bangernomics site says - "most likely cause of death - collision with another Golf".
We had one of these for a year, G reg, 120k on the clock and still started every time. Got rid of it for a p-o-s Mercedes A Class - wish we had the Golf back!

I have a 1988 1.3 Jetta with 172K on the clock. At the last MoT it required ONE replacement rear Shock absorber for the original factory part. The rear pair were replaced and the original fronts are still good - at the MoT before that it required only a number plate bulb. Tough as old boots. BUT the 1990 1.6 Jetta TX, which I also owned had nowhere near the same build quality and some of the component brands had been changed eg. starter motor made by Hitachi, Alternator from Valeo etc.
The Mk2 Jetta has been one of the best kept secrets, as far as the UK motoring public is concerned. Good used ones are as scarce as hens' teeth

I really miss my Jetta. I had an '88 Gti 16v for 4 years. Great car. Good power and economy for the time. And once i had replaced all the suspension, great handling too. gearboxes aren't great though.linkages wear, but you can get parts cheap for these cars. I stuck the braking system from an early vr6 corrado, with braided hoses, on mine. Early 16v and 8v gti's dont have very good brakes, but its really cheap and easy to upgrade them. If you want a fun car and have the time on your hands go for it.
