HJ's column - Dipstick
I've been meaning to ask for ages. Who the DICKENS writes the little sub headings for each letter in HJ's column in the Telegraph?

The puns are truly wonderful, and truly excruciating. It's someone mighty clever. I can't believe it's an anonymous department; they bear the hallmarks of a fiendish individuality.

I have often wondered what takes more time - answering the questions, or thinking up the heading.

Every week (sometimes up to 6 weeks in advance) HJ files about 20 pages of copy and sub-heads every letter. Then his editors try to beat him. Then the sub-editors try to beat them. Since the sub-eds have the final word, their stuff usually appears unless HJ or an editor has been super clever. So maybe one or two a week are mine. The rest are someone else's.

Thanks for the clarification HJ. Nice to know sometimes you're not beaten over the Ed.
