Got a new car ordered, it's in the country, but can't get it till 27th November due to going on hols next week, should I ask the dealer to hang on to it for another month to make it an '04 registered car? Any ideas of the difference in value over say a year? It's obviously the same car and it will be sitting in a field or a shed (if I'm lucky) for a month, but with Christmas looming it will be idle for 2 weeks over that period anyway. The car is an A3 3.2 Sport.

HJ would know this best but I believe most of the trade care more about the year of registration than the letter. Our company will not allow us to take delivery of new company cars in December for that reason so I guess there is some fact behind that

Depends how long you want to keep it.
If you're going to swap it in again, in a year or two, expect a valuation difference of several hundred £££.
If you're looking long term, the difference will obviously reduce, but it will always be SEEN to be a year older/newer.
I'd get the car delivered to you on trade plates, then keep it in the garage 'till midnight on 31 December! You can still polish it n sit in it , in the meantime!!

Glass's Guide does differentiate, so it will make a bit of difference for 2 - 3 years but not after that.

If you don't really need it until 01 Jan 2004, don't get it registered until then. If you have the funds, as has been said above, pay and get it delivered to your driveway/garage, but not licenced or taxed until 01 Jan - problem then is that you will need to keep it insured.

Yeah - but can't insure if not taxed, can't tax if not registered, and apparently can't register unless insured. Can't see them lending me trade plates, that would be illegal.
It's not even on the insurance web sites yet, i.e. doesn't exist, so can't get a quote yet.
I'll see what he says tomorrow, I'm happy to pay for it and let them get a months interest. See what happens.

Oh yes you can!
You have it insured on chassis number initially, then on registration number. Then the road risk element of the policy only becoming valid after registered & taxed, ie 00.01 hrs 01/01/04.
Best make sure it's delivered on a trailer, from the holding compound. No offence intended to any trade plate drivers, but just in case!!! Anyway, you'll want to have the pleasure of watching those first few hundred miles clicking over on the mileometer, yourself!!

So in the order of £300 after a year, £500 after 2, that kind of thing?
That'll pay for me BOSE! Thing is it was supposed to come in the new year, then I got a call saying it's at the docks waiting shipment and now it's here (well 300 miles away). I'll see what the man says tomorrow, I can wait, I'm tight like that! Plus I really shouldn't drive over the festive period!
I used broker4cars off here btw - good price!
