You wil notice that I am not moderating this thread. I am unable to defend this pop-up.
HJ is trying to resolve it with the advertisers, there is nothing else I can add.
Happy christmas one and all.

merry chrimbo all,
don't know if HJ's managed to sort this ad or not, but i've just discovered that it will close straight away if you click on the TINY close box at the bottom of the ad when it first pop's up in strip form!!

Martin, if you\'re really serious, please e-mail me and let me know how much you\'re willing to pay. As we have previously discovered, whip rounds and membership fees don\'t work with The Backroom, but if an individual is prepared to wholly sponsor the site then there is something to talk about.

Pop-ups are fine.
It's just when they get in the way of the real stuff.

Don't get any Volvo pop-up here. Maybe it suffered a similar fate to Beagle2 when it got to Asia....

Nor in Spain! Turned off Zone Alarm Pro, turned ON Flash Switch & Still no Volvo Pop up. I feel deprived!

Dammit! I should have kept my big mouth shut! The wretched thing has stricken me too.
I never wanted a Volvo anyway but if I was thinking of getting one I'd be heading for the Ford showroom now. Now where are those free anti-pop up sites?.....

In my opinion this excellent site is being spoiled by annoying pop-up ads.
I am currently trying to typ/readwith an ad. for Volvo permanently in the way. No, it wont go away when told - it just compacts. Really winds me up.
Any others annoyed as I am ?
|
Take it the pop - up ad also stops you from reading the other thread on the same subject?????
Yes, I agree, very annoying.
|
|
|
By scrolling down I read the previous comments so have answered my own question.
I know the need to finance the site but it should be configured correctly. Pop-ups are annoying enough but they should go away when told to do so.

There are two pop-up expanding banners for Volvo. One is no problem because it has a click box in the bottom left hand corner and if you don\'t want to read the sponsors message you can switch the whole thing off. The other doesn\'t have a click box in the bottom LH corner so can\'t be switched off. I have found that on my PC it\'s no problem. I just carry on in \'Flat View\' as if it isn\'t there and it goes away. But on a Mac it freezes you into the thread you\'re on and you have to go out of the site then come back in again to carry on. That is annoying and the agency has been notified, though it may not be able to do anything about this until it is back in business with a full staff again on 5th January. Sorry, everyone. As I mentioned before, the Volvo pop-up was moved by the media agency from the LH side bar to over The Backroom because it wasn\'t doing anything where it was. We have to have advertising to support the site. Volvo is an important advertiser so the matter has to be handled tactfully (by pointing out that Volvo may unwittingly be doing a itself a disservice by annoying Backroomers so much). Please always remember, if it wasn\'t for the business I have brought in to the site since May, The Backroom would have had to be closed down at the end of June.

Hj is it just me or does the Volvo pop up cover up half of the screen on your PC ? its a good advert and i've been on the site and I realise it keeps us up and running, but doe's it have to block out half my screen?

Bear with H.J should be sorted soon.I had a message saying this

Something to do with the adserver agency......who aren't back at work yet!

The short term cure seems to be to use the browser back button followed by the forward button ...
I see it with IE6 under Win 2K.

Just hitting F5 will refresh the window and remove the pop-up.

Just hitting F5 will refresh the window and remove the p*****.
Not today seemingly. I had it on a few messages and no matter how many times I refreshed it wouldn't go away...
I must say I really dislike this new 'breed' of p*****s - I can live with the ones that open their own window as they can be hidden and closed easily once you are done with them. However, this type (which aren't really p*****s anyway) block the content you want and often can't be got rid of, especially on non-IE systems. Luckily newer versions of Mozilla have had work-arounds implemented but at one point this type of advert would lock the browser solid with no way other than cycling the power to continue...
|
It's still there, annoying the hell outta me!
Thought they could have of sorted it by now....

Well I've experienced the most frustrating aspect of this damn thing.
Bear with us and in the meantime hit F5 to refresh the page you tell us.
Right so I'm halfway through doing a complicated post and the thing stops me seeing what I've typed...so I hit F5...and the page comes back with all my post gone.
Flufy dice indeed.
After all it's not as if Volvo are paying for me to be here is it!

Seem to have found the answer, on my browser anyway.
I am currently using Avant as my browser and it allows me to block flash animations, noticed that the D5 ad is not a real p***** as such but is a Macromedia Flash window so tried blocking flash animations, Eureka!!!
I know HJ has taken the high level of annoyance of this particular ad on board and would just like to add my voice to those who say that we quite understand the need for the ads, they're just a fact of life but this one has REALLY annoyed purely because it NEVER seems to go away.

[meekly raises hand]
Please sir, I\'ve been in London all day and HJ is away on the other side of the world and I really don\'t know what\'s going on with this blessed pooh-pup.
Hope that helps.
PS. Had an annoying Volvo pop up in MY lane of the M3 today (I borrowed it from a truck driver just to show the BMWs that there are lanes that don\'t come with Armco 2 ft from your right elbow). Said volvo insisted on flaunting his brightly coloured paintwork and illuminated roofrack to the general chagrin of all right-minded commuters who thought (wrongly) that the police don\'t patrol along there before 6.00am.
Grumble mumble.... must have cost me all of 2 minutes off my journey time, slowing for all the plonkers stamping on their brakes in panic and slowing to 62.3mph so as not to overtake said Volvo. Didn\'t realise it was illegal to overtake police cars......

Personally I quite like it !
You like having half of the postings obscured by something you can't get rid of?
Come on, HJ and Mods - can we *please* either have some pressure put on to get this fixed or removed, or better dump this ad agency and get a decent one?

Mr Steve,
I think you missed the point...I was being a tad sarcastic. Incidentally, I like your variation on the subject title

I've been having a private *discussion* with my fellow mods. I haven't seen the Volvo Ad since last Sunday evening. I honestly thought that the problem had been resolved. The only poop up I now get is the AOL one when I first log in, then nothing - zilch afterwards. Same for No Dosh as well, but Mark was still plagued with them the other day.
I'm afraid I can't add anything positive to this reply. I haven't got any answers as to why some people are still getting them, whereas others are not. As previously mentioned, until the problem can be remedied, just press function key F5 to refresh the page. You might to do this twice in sucsession.
Is anyone who is using Windows XP still getting the Volvo Ad at all?

Actually I am quite a Volvo fan and the V40 has recently been growing on me.
However I came across this p**** today for the first time, and I even clicked lots on it! but the thing would not shut down! now that's a first I will remember for a while, for the wrong reasons. come on, Volvo's ad agency, make a p**** we will like which will make us buy Volvos!
I use Windows ME. As I therefore have ME, for medical reasons I can't be bothered to do anything about it....

PS Incidentally I find AutoTrader an EXCELLENT sponsor...

I'm running XP and still get the D5 ad, which DOES NOT disappear when F5 is pressed. It's beginning to put me off the site. Come on, it's nearly a month that we have had to put up with this infernal bit of advertising.

I use the Opera browser, and just turn of p*****s -- 3 mouse clicks for off, 3 to turn it back on again. It's an excellent browser is so many other ways -- much much faster and more user-friendly than Internet Explorer -- but it's worth having for this feature alone. See www.opera.com
Alternatively, try the excellent (and free) Mozilla browser -- www.mozilla.com -- which also allows you to turn off p*****s, though it takes six mouse-clicks to turn them, and another six to turn them off
Hope this helps!

Mozilla seems unable to block this one, probably as it's not a p***** as such, but appears to be embedded in the page itself.
DD - I say again, reloading doesn't always work. Also, having to reload the page means you lose the markers indicating which posts you haven't read yet.
It might also be worth pointing out to Volvo that the ad agency is getting 'false' hits on this one. Where it is it's easy enough to roll over accidentally and trigger it, plus most people see to end up messing with it a few times trying to close it before they realise it won't go. Definitely bad PR I'm afraid.

I've just experimented a bit, and it definitely doesn't show on Opera ... not even when p*****s are turned on. I guess Opera doesn't recognise whatever code it is that enables things, which is fine by me

ivorytower: i get no poop-up, no animation, nothing, never. i could explain how settings on browser combine with free-agnitum-outpost-firewall kill poop-up and other nasties dead 100% like domestos. but only if mods first post here to say it okay to do so. i not want to upset hj mods coz by publish these tricks i stop their income and kill the site! info freely available on internet if you know where to look.

I am using XP and F5 does nothing. Trying to read the 'Longbridge Sale' thread and can't read a couple of the messages. Surely it must be counter-productive as I find I am looking at the site less and less.

Windows ME and F5 twice does not work. That said I don't get it every time now.

Strangely, all day today I have not had any poop-ups, volvo, aol or ebay. I will have to stop visiting the site if I am going to be left out of all the fun.
|
|
There is something sinister about this volvo ad. As soon as I made that last post the basket-thing has pooped back!!! Now I'm getting paranoid - I'm definitely off to bed.
|
I haven't had it for a couple of days (the p***** I mean...)
I thought it had been fixed.
|
Why did I say that? It just came back. And why did the word "p*****" get Nanny's attention?
|
|
In case it is any use to the people who are trying to get rid of the ad - I use XP pro and I logged off yesterday because I couldn't read the item I was interested in as it was blocked by the volvo ad.
|
On XP and it's still here this morning.
The ad is getting better behaved than previously and usually the F5 2x gets rid of it, and if not clicking on back < & forwards > a couple of times does it, which is similar in some respects to hitting F5 depending upon how your Explorer browser is set up. The pain is when it appears mid post just as it is now. Do you lose what you've typed in by refreshing or just persevere.
Feedback to Volvo though, this ad is definitely beginning to give me negative vibes. Must be many more feeling the same.
Was considering next car might be a V40 after HJ's rave review of the new S40. In a close run thing negative vibes may tip the balance and go to another brand outside the Ford group.
|
As I said in a different thread, I did have a word with the ad agency over this ad. They suggested pulling it while they sorted it out, but I am not in a position to authorise this. HJ is in control of this side of things, so I told them not to, but did ask them to sort the thing out with the creative agency who made the thing.
So they are aware of the problems with it and the grief it is causing.
We just have to be patient while they get it sorted.

On XP and it's still here this morning.
Looks like I've tempted fate as I've got the poop up back again now. However, by pressing F5 twice (do it once, then wait a couple of seconds, then do it again) I managed to make it go away again. As for loosing the "New" marker against a particular post, I just pressed Ctrl F (the find command in IE) and searched for the word 'Sun 11' and then looked at the time stamp.
|
As we've all been told by now, the ad is used to pay for the site. That includes the forum, servers, bandwidth, etc.
Someone mentioned bandwidth earlier. I'm sure that all these people hitting F5 whenever the add appears, will sky-rocket the sites bandwidth usage!
It's a bit ironic that one of the things the ad is meant to be paying for may be getting more expensive because of it.
Just a thought :-)
|
But of course, we, you, me and other BRrs have the ultimate sanction. Don't we?
We can refuse to buy a V****, that'll larn 'em!
Not that I would have bought one anyway.

That infernal ad crashes my computer every time it comes up - despite me trying to block p*****s, which I don't normally do on this site because HJ points out the site needs the revenue. But to paraphrase Oscar Wilde's final words: "Either that wallpaper (ad) goes, or I do."

Just as a point of order DD, I've hit F5 four times in succession and its still here.
I'm off..............

Just as a point of order DD, I've hit F5 four times in succession and its still here.
And did you pause for a couple of seconds between those four times at all?
I'm on a different puter and operating system today and I can still remove the advert with a couple of presses of the F5 button.

Yes! Sorry DD I know this is not your personal doing but...
I paused for several seconds between presses ie not less than two not more than four. When the ad came back each time I pressed F5 again, after the fourth attempt gave up.

I don\'t know what else to suggest. This advert has a mind of it\'s own. It seems to behave randomly on different people\'s pc\'s and operating systems. Some people are getting it frequently, some not at all. Some people can make it go away, others not.
With parameters like these, no wonder it can\'t be easily resolved. Before anyone suggests removing it altogether, remember that the revenue gained from this pop-up is *helping* to keep the site here. That is not to say that I am in favour of this advert; people who frequently see it and cannot make it go away do have my sympathy.
|
And yet today DD, not a single sighting........
:thinks: might regret opening mouth later ;)
re pop ups, understand the purpose and need, no objection here.
I just entered this debate because I felt if I were the advertiser I would want to know that my ads were causing negative vibes in some areas. Maybe they are of the philosophy "that there is no such thing as bad publicity" If so then OK fair enough.

I think the Volvo D5 campaign has now come to its scheduled end.
Perhaps it's entered a new dimension on the roads - I had to stop because of an accident just round a bend on a country road and shortly after stopping heard something sounding large and busy approaching.
There was a huge hiss and sound of tyres scrabbling for grip, and when I finally had the nerve to look in my mirror it was pretty well filled with O V L O V on the front of the truck!
Another unwelcome popup.
