Renault Scenic - bit of a dog? - Jonathan {p}
Just seen the latest advert for the scenic. Apparently the selling point is that its like a dog. Have I missed something?

woof woof, just hope it cleans up after itself, messy beasts !

Hmmmmmmm.........expensive trips to have problems with its innards sorted? Leaves a mess on the driveway? Liable to bite the hand that feeds it?

Might be a bit of a dog alright.....

Fear not Scenic Lovers your defender is here........

Nope... 4 years from new, most practical car I ever had, never let me down,no unsceduled trips to the vet, wife Nicolle, son Andre, Grand Mere, and family pooch Fifi have all nagged me lots since I swapped for the svelt and sexy lines of the laguna.

Dog? no it was a family pet, much loved. (and much abused)

Perhaps you missed the fact that it's a Renault...

Coincidental timing? I've just posted a road test of the new Scenic dCi 120. Very good vehicle. And I'm not actually receiving a lot of complaints about things going wrong with it either. So maybe Renault has started getting it right.

Like Renaultman I have a Scenic, but a 1998 diesel DTi. Only problems have been the number of recalls, but this is better than previous cars where the manufacturers have washed their hans of parts problems that they knew about and should IMHO have paid for when they broke!
Back to question I posted a couple of weeks ago - HJ (and others) what has the new Scenic got that the Sport Tourer hasn't that justifies the extra premium in price?
Renault Scenic - bit of a dog? - BobbyG
Not fully answering your question on this link or your other one, but I too had an original Scenic dti which I loved, got high 40's mpg and it was great.

So much so that when I replaced it I got the facelifted Scenic, and went for the all new dci 105 engine which was the dog's proverbials according to Renault. I get low 40mpg (at a push) and it has absolutely no guts about it, to the extent that I prefer to drive my P reg Saxo diesel as I feel it has more power. Renault Family has the dci 120 engine in his Laguna and swears by it, and by all accounts its the same engine as the 105 with some modifications.
I know the new style Scenic comes with the 120 but although I love the Scenic apart from its engine, its enough to make me very wary about getting another one. I really would need to get a full weekend test drive to convince myself.

HJ, a friend of mine has a new Scenic and I would have swore that his boot was smaller than my facelifted Scenic. But interesting to see that the old Scenic luggage capacity is 410 / 1800 and the new one is 430/1840 !!
Looks can be deceiving!!

Diesel engine power outputs can vary enormously. They did with XUTDs and VAG TDIs as well. Seems partly to do with how loose the engine is (which depends on how it has been run in), partly (obviously) to do with the fuelling, partly to do with the turbo and partly to do with the way the ECU is programmed. That's why simply chipping a diesel can give very varied results. My test was of an 8,000 mile 03 reg press fleet Scenic dCi 120 which had the benefit of lots of different drivers.

It has to be said that HJ drove the privelge version as well. Now while the engine/handling may be the same as poverty spec versions, they dont come with the big centre console /storage box and other ~"cool" goodies. The good thing about the old scenic was (in its run out years) the price and the spec level.

The new one is positively dear in camparison.

Oh and re the 120 in the goona, the gear ratios in the new 6speed 120 are different too.. I drove the new scenic dci 120 (just being nosey) and the engine is STILL not as sweet as in the goona.

Have we all seen the new Renault Scenic telly advert? The one where it develops a mind of its own, drives round in circles (as a dog does) then ends with the rear window wiper spinning around?

It does a good job of being humourous, but let's hope that it is not a subtle warning of potential electrical faults that Renaults are (allegedly) likely to be prone to!!

In answer to Renault Family, I could have done without the monster console box, which I guess is really intended for large ladies handbags rather than for their Yorkshire Terriers. And I made the point that the dCi 120 I drove had done 8,000 miles in the hands of lots of different drivers, which made it nice and free revving. They may not all be like that.

Possibly a drawback of Global Marketing...what might be amusing in mainland Europe may have an unfortunate spin in other countries. I am surprised that Renault UK marketing bods let this one through. Nothing like my dog,I hope, which as previously reported has a most evil temper and totally unforgiving nature - but has Germanic build quality and reliability.
New Scenic - Is it a dog? - Ben79
Is there a hidden message in the new Scenic TV advert? Has anyone here driven one? Is it a dog really?

It\'s OK using the wiper as a tail and a creaky window crying at you, but what\'s the car like?

I can\'t think of any adverts that suggest a car is a lemon though.

Just returned from 2 weeks hols with a high spec 120DCi as fhe family hire car. I hated it, but only because we have an MPV already, and SWMBO loved it so much she wanted to change my 3 series BMW for a new one. Two MPVs in the family would be a bit much! It really is the consumate sensible family car, really thoughtfully designed, but I can't quite see the panache and personality that others think is present. It really is a terrific car for its purpose, and the DCi engine is much more refined than the PD unit in my Alhambra. I love my Alhambra to bits (really!), but I thought it was a van after the scenic, and I never thought I would say that. The dash is an ergonomic disaster though,it feels cheap (its rubber!) and the digital display is awful. The automatic handbrake takes some getting used to, and does not work that well.

All in all the definitive (sensible) family car.
