Does anybody know of any good books that have the theme of cars or the car industry?
Do any authors specialise in motoring fiction?
Fancy a change from grisly slayings...
Thanx all...

Harold Robbins, 'The Betsy'.

Struth, that was quick, cheers.
Read a good non fiction one last year. A very old one by Peter May about his building of the BRM F1 team. Fascinating! It gave a great insight into just how difficult Grand Prix racing is...

Wheels by Arthur Hailey
A story of the supercharged world of the American car industry. From the grime and crime of a Detroit assembly line, through to the top-secret design studios and executive boardrooms and bedrooms, the author gives the reader a study of the motor metropolis.

I can't remember his name but there was (is?) a thriller writer that specialised in the world of Motorsport. I think he maybe American, I vaguely remember reading a few of his novels several (probably more than 10) years ago.
A bit like Dick Francis on 4 wheels ... if you know what I mean!

That would be Bob Judd then.
Novels such as Silverstone, Monza, Phoenix etc. Basicly crime thrillers revolving around Formula One drivers.
Not bad holiday reading, nice motorsport details, not great literature.

Cheers Stackman - I've been trawling the net for the name since my first post. I vaguely remembered the first name being "Bob" but couldn't remember either the surname or any of his titles. My memory has never been very good and I did read them back in the '80s!

Exactly, though I'm sure you could do a lot worse :-)

Not fictional, but in-between. You should read "Raw Spirit" by Iain Banks, it's his first non-fictional work. It's about whisky and driving. He basically drives round the SCottish distilleries in his 911/M5/old Jag/Land Rover with his mates, and gets paid for doing so. Lots of fine social commentary along the way, and he never uses the main roads.

One of my favourite non-fiction motoring books is "Turning Back the Clock: The Life & Times of a Motor Trader" by Geoff Owen.
Here's an Amazon link if you have an account with them tinyurl.com/ys592

Here's a slightly geeky one ;)
There was a short story called 'Along the scenic route' by Harlan Ellison, which later became part of the inspiration for the 'Car Wars' strategy/vehicular combat game. It's not really possible to find it now outside of the hefty 'Best Of' you can buy (which is mostly Sc-Fi and generally quite good) but if you stumble across a copy it's worth a read.

Not fiction, but worth a read as a motorbike journal of biking all over N. America
Ghost Rider by Neil Peart
