Just look at Mitsubishi. The Japanese make reliable, if dull cars, but seem to have a blind spot when it comes to corporate finance......

Unlike say .... Ford (drowning in debt) ... or Renault (propped up with state aid for years) ... or FIAT (rolling in cash, they are). VW didnt seem to be doing brilliantly last time I read anything on them
I suspect that the problems of the Japanese car-makers are more a consequence of the economy there spending a decade in crisis. The low-inflation gurus ignored the old rules about the need for some inflation, with the result that the colapse of a 1980s buble-economy left Japan with long-term delation. That's fatal for any business, because when you have price deflation it'll always be cheaper to wait before you buy anything.
I suspect that Japan's corporate financiers deserve prizes for holding out so long

Don't forget Rover, NW. Another shining example of good governance - regular bailouts for decades, nearly bring down the Germans who come in to take over, then sell for a £1 valuation.

Saw a picture of a new (well, possibly new, you know what these car magazine 'scoops' are like) Nissan Almera.
It was a Megane with a different grill and a few other tweaks.
At least VW try and make their cars look different.

Whilst on the subject, am I the only person that thinks that the headlights of the new Golf are identical to the Nissan Tino?

It could be a disaster, if the match goes wrong you will end up with the worst of both characteristics. Do you remember the Alfa and Nissan joint venture in the mid 80's that spawned the Nissan Arna and Alfa (Europa? - not sure) which had Nissan bodywork and Alfa engines? It's a while ago but at the time it seemed quite unusual.

You just reminded me of the Nissan Cherry that was available in two tone paint - was it silver and red, and silver and blue? Am sure it was a special edition of some sort!

BobbyG - I think the joint Nissan Cherry Europa and Alfa Arna was around 1984, the more boxy styled Cherry after the facelift that continued to around to the late 1980's. It's difficult to remember that far back! Also most examples have now rusted in peace. I bet there is a website somewhere with a database of such models. You are probably right about the paint scheme, although they were pretty terrible 80's style efforts, similar to the Triumph Aclaim (remember those?) - getting off message now, it was supposed to be Nissan/Renault not Honda/Rover!

Can't resist i'm afraid. As some of you know I have an 02 Master. All the toys. Excatly 2 yrs old now. No real probs and sad as it may seem, I love it, and I don't put up with any carp from anybody.....fact. Therefore I would and probably will have another soonest. NOW... Local Renault dealer lent me a new megane, (with the funny back end), as a courtesy car during a 36k service on the van. Innovation, and good innovation by the bucketful, but underpowered and tinny and a second hand disaster waiting to happen. In this age when even the morons have access to James Bond technology, can't we have RELIABLE, 'fancy' techno stuff?

Renault isn't as bad as many people make out there product may somtimes be flawed but you'd think again when you know where Renault car bits have been used.
Volvo use Renault engine have done for yrs infact (although they use VAG diesels (well Audi ones but there the same)
The Micra is achaully the Clio platform just that Nissan needed a replacment car and Renault gave them the one they had.
I'm not sure Renault have admitted what bits are shared it might (and is most likely) infact just be the platform ie wiring engines etc and chassic /suspension interier etc are different nothing wrong with that Renault has a history with wiring problems so maybe using the Miccra to iron out bugs will help make a better car.
The nissan 6 speed box isn't all its cracked up to be though ;-)

Yes, I had read somewhere that the Nissan Micra design had used the Clio's next new floor pan (as was then) from day 1.
As to key sensing on the Nissan, the SE version's has had that for many months, if not from the first day. All you need to drive the car is to have the keys on your person.
It's down side is that after a spell of such driving it is all too easy to get out of a conventional car for a newspaper shop and leave the keys in the ignition! ! ! But perhaps only once.
The gearbox on the new micra has a very notchy feel during changes but the box works well, the change is fast, and much preferred to that on the previous micra. The gears worked OK previously but I found the gate clumsy compared to a Fiesta (previous model) for instance.
