Well it's based on a 200 Vi and it's got a 1.8 K Series that is prone to HGF, especially as these tend to be driven rather enthusiastically. Make sure it's got a full history and do the usual checks for HGF.

No direct experience of the 200 BRM, but I would confidently predice HGF in the near future. Surely there has to be a better car to meet his needs?

I'd imagine the price of the car to be somewhere around the £2.5k to £3k mark and there are loads of better cars with similar performance.

Yes the head gasket does go regularly and just because it's been done once doesn't mean it won't go again.

A 6p hollow pin pin falls out of the external gear linkage leaving you with no gears. So buy some 6p hollow pins.

The car is a 99 V BRM LE with 65,000 miles up, it has

New Dunlops all round
New Janspeed SS exhaust
New Black Diamond Disks and Pads
Clifford Concept 600 Alarm
Sony MP3 head unit and CD changer
Sony 6 * 9s
1100 quid receipt from 2 months ago for Head Gasket replacement with uprated MG ZR item and other work
161 BHP rolling road printout
Tax until Jun 05
MOT until Jan 05
All receipts and MOT's from new
Its immaculate (judging by the pictures) and description

For less than 3 grand, 3 grand gets you an M reg Golf GTI which is a lot slower and doesnt handle nearly as well, basically anything remotely interesting at 3 gran is now ancient or has 120 + miles, as for the Head Gasket going again, so what, it shouldnt but if it does I will fit a head gasket, takes about half a day, half the problem is the cooling is marginal, as these cars get older the crap oe rad crumbles and water temp goes up, bits of rad clog it, the engine runs hotter and stuff starts failing, this has had it all done including a new rad, I only do about 4k miles a year due to car sharing and a lot of holidays so I am not going to worry about it, besides I deserve some luck after a Fiat Coupe with a wonky Turbo.

If they are so bad, I will become a dab hand at changing them.

If you want the Rover, buy it but I and others think there are far better cars for the money. Two that spring to mind are a BMW 320 (or 318, 325...). Won't be as new but will still be nice if you buy well. Also Primera GT. Superb handling quick car and RELIABLE!
You make, to a large extent, your own luck and with respect, you are not going to give yourself the best start by buying a known unrelable car.
Primera GT, 1998, Silver, 119k miles (no problem), a/c, leather in Autotrader for £2100, Private.

I wonder if these are the same 6p hollow pins that used to fall out of my (1973) Mini's gearchange linkage?!

Yep, even if repaired the K-series HGF can happen again, and again and again!

So nobody should ever buy a Rover fitted with a K series, its amazing how you see so many on the roads still dragging themselves around on K an L plates.

As for the Primera GT, I hadnt thought of that but ideally a fancy a hot hatch type thing, if the BRM doesnt come of I might have another look. Drove a new one in 98 and enjoyed it, bit of a mini cab though.

3 Series, fantastic drivers car but cant be doing with the BMW 3 series image, at 3 grand it would be a bit of a snotter or have been treated to a bad boy bonnet and Lexus lights.>> Yep, even if repaired the K-series HGF can happen again, and

From what I`ve read. Bearing in mind its the VVC unit.Seems well liked. And is fast. looks good as well.BRM was limited in production to 795 motors.(in uk) I am not certain and cannot say whether it suffered HGF as others did. But will say from point of view the amount of 200 series still around. May be the HGF failure didnt affect all cars?. If it did. if job done properly should last for years

J4CKO, if you want it buy -sounds like you are the majority of the way there already.
However whilst the spec looks impressive it shouts out only one thing to me - its been hammered ! Rolling Road, Janspeed this Black Diamond that.
That said I do remember an article in Auto Express a few months back that said as hot hatches go (when it goes), these were pretty good in the bargain basement department.
I would also recommend the Primera Gt, its a bit bland on the outside but they handle well and go surprisingly well.

Good Luck

Pezzer - my feelings exactly!

Whilst it hasn't got a bad boy bonnet and lexus lights it will have lead a hard life - you don't change the brakes, exhaust etc and then gently pootle round in it
