Great read John but you don't state weather the new Focus gets the thumbs up or down? It seems that you have agreed with other pundits that the styling has failed but everything else seems ok, so what's the bottom line with you? (and maybe other backroomers?)

Not exactly cheap at over £14K for the cheapest diesel. One would have to hope that they will be discounted.

Required conclusion added. Thanks for pointing out the need for one.

I wouldn't normally carp at styling. But for me, the issue with this car is that the first focus was stylistically a confident, bold step, and this one has correspondingly disappointed. Instead of tweaking the old, creating some sharper lines and sleeker looks, they appear to have put padding round the edges and turned off the 'confidence' of the old car. I think this is a mistake.
However, HJ's comments on the quality of the materials and the ride are very encouraging.
My conclusion, based on HJ's report would be: if you want quality and affordability then look nowhere else; if looks bother you, you might want to size up the opposition.

I don't like the restyle either. Bit like some of the dodgy Rover 'styling updates' which include oversized badging, squaring-off of bumpers, trying to reshape headlight surrounds to look more BMW, and the highlight (literally) that was the dayglo orange grill trim a few years ago. I wonder how much of an influence bad styling really is on peoples' choice?

I have just checked on the drivethedeal.com site and there are no discounts whatsoever on any of the models I covered.
This makes it a expensive choice compared with a lot of the competition.

Too soon to expect discounts on the new Focus. Ford always fights this with a new model. Depending on how the new Focus sells, we might have to wait some time for significant discounts. But obviously if no one buys the new Focus without a discount, Ford will be forced to cut prices earlier.

Well, that's a rave review if ever I read one! I'm personally not too fussed what the outside of a car looks like, unless it's weird of course! Once you are in it you can't see what it looks like, after all.
As far as car interiors are concerned, I think there is far too much concentration, by reviewers, on the visual appeal. As long as everything is clear, logical and works properly I can't see that it matters if the finish is grey, black or has lots of "bland" plastic.
