Purchasing a used BMW330 DieselSpo - TheGrocer
Hello Room
I am considering purchasing an 18 month old BMW 330Diesel Sport. I love the 6 cylinder diesel engine and the power and handling are arguably the best there is. I am looking to purchase through an approved BM franchise as I have seen too many examples of dodgy BMs in the private press. Now comes the question:
I have seen second hand prices start to fall at 3 of my local dealers, as an example a May 2003 330d Sprt Saloon with 15k on the clock recently took a 2k discount from the advertised 27k to 25k. Can I expect more price drops based on the quiet market? When is the best time to do a deal with a desparate BMW rep in the next 2 months. How much impact will the soon to be released new 3 series have on the existing stock?
What do you think, any thoughts, should I wait for the next set of price drops?....I need to buy a car before the end of the year.

TheGrocer also e-mailed me. For what it's worth, this was my reply:- "Except for 'Christmas Present' type cars like MINIs, the market usually remains very quiet in the run-up to Christmas, then can take off in the New Year. However, bad weather can severely delay take-off. That said, tate E46s must get cheaper as the new 3-Series gets closer to its 2005 launch." See also the thread 'Tumbleweed in Auto Land'.

A lot depends on the general economy too. I was in the car game in '89/90 and when house prices really started to drop an awful lot of upmarket cars came onto the market. I suspect it could be even worse if this happens again. I gather Britain is the most highly indebit country in W. Europe (£1 trillion consumer debt is it??) - most of it probably backed (in reality or psychologically) by property.

The debt figures are inflated because they include mortgages. If you have a mortgage for £120k and the house is worth £250k, then you're not really in debt are you? However if your mortgage is greater than the value of your house then you could be in debt if you choose to move house. Negative equity is only important if you want to move house or if you can't make your monthly mortgage repayments.

Agreed a great car though at 25 grand very poor value, have a look at the Motorpoint or Trade Sales ads in yesterday's Telegraph. I haven't got it in front of me though I am sure I saw a 52 reg 330d Sport at something like £16999, from what I remember not high mileage either.

That actually does seem good value, albeit it may be an import. The Great Trade Centre's only 330d is an 89k, 2000X plate car at £14k.

Hi TheGrocer,

Would you consider buying through e-bay ?

I`m on the look out for a nearly new BMW and noticed one on ebay - still has 25months warranty left on it.

Would bid myself but don`t want a Sport model (never mind the fact I`m a little bit scared of e-bay!!)
