Get the Honda Accord diesel. Superb car!
Yes, I expected to but when we tried sitting in it we were surprised how much smaller it felt than a mondeo, particularly in the back a lot less head and shoulder room and a bit darker too. After all the rave reviews it was a real surprise not to even need to take it for a drive - just trying to sit in it was enough.
Trouble is SWMBO really doesn't like the whole dealership/test drive business and so it would be helpful if anyone can help us rule a toyota in/out of the picture.
Has no one here got an avensis D4D? go on you can admit it ..

Mine lets me go on my own now. I only wheel her in to chip away at the price.

IIRC, Honest John himself is a fan of the Toyota D4-D engines, at least in the Yaris, in particular its smoothness.

Sorry, Ratty, I checked all my data and I simply forgot to record the mph/1,000 rpm of the Avensis D-4D I ran last year.

I have a 52 plate D4D avensis liftback. (Previous model)
The engine is a good engine, much quieter than the 1.9 tdi I had in my 97 Passat.
I travel 60 miles each way to work and get approx 49 mpg (all motorway.)
The build quality is ok, (no squeaks or rattles). Seats are ok, although not as fully adjustable as I would like. The thing that is missing is 6th Gear. I am not sure if the new model is 6 speed or not, but I could get much more MPG if I had.
I will post the mph/1000rpm after I have driven back home and I am assuming that it will be the same as the newer model (I don't think they changed the ratios.)

May not be much use to you, but I've just picked up a T3-X 2.0 Auto 5 door Avensis.
Very nice so far, very pleased with it.
I have read split views on the D4D-some say it is the engine to get, others say not. Shows personal taste then and nothing truly wrong with it!
Shout if you want to fire any questions at me.

Last week i delivered a brand new Avensis D4D 5dr from our showroom in Burton on Trent to Southend on sea.
Most of it was 70 - 80 mph on motorway apart from last 10 miles into Southend which was nose to tail crawling at 10mph. The on board computer was indicating 55 MPG.

I have not driven a D4-D Avensis however on paper it produces a lot less torque than for instance a Mondeo TDCi 130, a Passat TDi 130, A4 TDi 140, BMW 320d etc so will feel a lot less punchy I am sure.

....... however it is said that Toyoata are launching some new diesel engines next year.

150bhp and 180bhp (both diesel) towards the end of 2005

I thought that ratty seemed more concerned about comfort and noise than about oomph?

To pull a high top gear requires a alot of torque, he says "A mondeo doing 35mph/1000rpm sounds good" presumably refering to the TDCi 130 6 speed which is pulling 2000rpm at 70mph and is in the middle of the torque curve so will pull quite strongly from 50/55mph without changing down, however a car of the same weight with 2/3 or 3/4 of the torque pulling the same gearing could require rather a lot of gear changing.
That being said I find my 02' Mondeo TDCi 130 5 speed's gearing ideal, approx 31.5mph/1000rpm in top means less than 3000rpm at 90mph, approx 2200rpm at 70mph and pulls like a train from 45mph
