Focus C-Max 2.0Tdci? - dodo
Very tempted by the local Ford offer of a new C-Max 2.0 Tdci Ghia in silver at £12995. Reports seem mixed -good build quality and nice to drive. Lots of room and well equipped and should be nippy. On the down side the cabin is a bit narrow and I'm told economy isn't great. Has anyone got one of these? Whats do you think? Cheers

Should be everything that you say but for economy, 50mpg is possible. Sounds like a great deal.

That engine and box normally pulls 35mph/1,000 rpm in 6th, so you need 5th or even 4th for road works and it's happiest in 3rd in 30 limits. I'm getting one next year for 6 months to check reliability.

I drove around 2-3k miles in Europe in a LHD one this year. It was the 1.6 Diesel. I was skeptical at first (never driven a Ford over long distances before) but a total convert by the time I'd finished with it. Seemed an excellent car all round. Hard driven it averaged 48mpg.

Only downside was that it was a bit easy to stall at 'car park' speeds.

Glad you mentioned it, Aprilia. Thing I've noticed about this 1.6 16v diesel is it will rev to at least 5,200 whereas most diesels hit the wall at about 4,500. That makes it much more petrol-like to drive because in the real world few drivers regularly go much past 5,000rpm, but they do notice if the governer cuts in at 4,600. The 2.0 16v is much lower revving and much higher geared, so 3rd of its 6 speed box is the most appropriate gear at 30mph. I'm getting a 2.0 TDCI Zetec in the new year in the hope Ford has sorted out its ECU problems.

Jury is still out. Seems the car is a 04.25 model -not a 2005 model. Is this a problem or what changes are there to the model between between these dates?

The dealer should tell you that. I saw a 2005 model Zetec 2.0 TDCi in a min dealer yesterday, £17500!

No significant difference, Ford will just be trying to shift the oldest stock first, they currently have tyhe 04.25 models available very cheaply through Motability in a bid to shift them more quickly.

The only difference that I can think of from the top of my head is that the radios have recently had an update, the preset buttons are now silver coloured on the 2005 model. And that's about it as far as I know.

I wouldn't let the model year put you off seeing as the car has had no changes of any signifigance at all.

Well 1000 miles into the C Max and I'm stunned. very probably one of the best cars I have ever owned (well close to my favourite VW Golf 1.8 Tour anyway). It does 40 mpg, goes like the wind and has lots of bits and pieces. In real day to day driving it can do exactly what the Golf GTi (latest model0 I had a couple of weeks ago. Has HJ got his yet?

Mine hasn't been built yet. I now expect to get it late March. dodo, please keep reporting. Especially average fuel consumption. I'm getting feedback on this engine in other cars that it's only doing mid to high 30s economy.

I was very impressed with a 1.6Tdci hire car and I normally hate diesels (I guess that bears-out HJ's point about the 1.6 engine).

Cabin seemed wide enough to me.
