Some time ago I found a car registration site that let you putin a number and it told you where and when it was issued. Can't find it now. Anyone know of such a site.

This site doesn't seem worth a d*mn to me. I've tried both our cars on it - 99 and 00 respectively - and it hasn't heard of either.

I input three old registrations and it did not work for any of them. Just tried to sell me a different plate. If a few more of you confirm this then I'll have to delete the link because it's competitive to the (slow) paying link on the site and taking business from the (slow) paying link.

It worked for me checking numbers right back to 1904, which was as far back as I personally could go. For the 1904 plate, it even gave what year the number was used up to ~ 1928. Brilliant website.

Did you perhaps input the number in "Find your new reg" ? You need to use "Was it issued?". Works every time for me.

Yes. And all the thing did was send me to the "find your new reg" window. The regs were HWX 10, 3337 N, WWS 8K, RJA 570 and C31 DYE all of which were on cars I once ran so I know they existed.

Nope on 3. However, one is an Irish plate so may not work, and the other was on a car from the Isle of Man so I'm presuming wasn't the original plate either. Doesn't work for a good old 2000 British plate though!!!

Very strange - just done it on a some cars my Dad owned a Wolsley 16/60,Ford Cortina and horrible Morris 1800 (Land Crab) and it works every time. Is this a browser issue ? Mozilla v.1.

It is Opera. Tried it in IE and it "worked". I say it like that because on my Dad's past 3 cars, it reckons the plates were never issued.
They were.
In Opera I don't get a thing.

The search doesn't work in Monzilla. In IE it's fine, recognises all of my previous reg's apart from the current one!

I've now tried another dozen numbers from 1973 onwards, with rather less than 50% success [using IE]. It hasn't traced any later than 1996 (six), so my small sample suggests their database may be rather out of date. In any case they only tell you what any I-Spy book could - year and issuing council. If you are looking for a Was it or Wasn't it answer, it definitely looks unreliable.

With my head for remembering them, I just tried it for the registration of every vehicle owned in the UK by myself, wife, brother, or parents, over the past thirty two years.

1974
1979
1984 (two cars)
1987
1988
1989 (two cars)
1993
1994 (two cars)
1997
1998 (two cars and a motorbike)
2000 (two cars)
2002 (52)
2003 (03)
So, a grand total of twenty vehicles.
Nineteen were successful, but one of the two cars registered on a W plate in 2000 failed.

Just seen posts re Mozilla v IE, so add that my previous post was conducted using IE v6.

If C31 DYE is listed at £800 then I have done a certain West Country vicar more of a favour than I thought. A couple of years ago I offered our old Jetta GT, C31 DYE, free "to a man of the cloth", here in The Backroom. No problem. Am very happy to have helped in this small way. But I hope he benefited and not some trader turning a quick profit out of him.
