So I've got about £11k burning a hole in my pocket, am hoping to buy an ex-fleet diesel automatic car (audi a4 / passat / volvo s60 or equivalent).
I've been reading the auction news for a few months now and figure I'm ready to have a go myself. Question is - will I get more for my money now or after christmas?
Cheers

If I were you, I wouldnt buy at my first auction. I would go there a couple of times first to see how it works, who the traders are, the lingo used etc etc. You may even see the same cars going through.
All that means you may not have enough time to get one bought before xmas.

Prices traditionally go up by 5% - 10% in January.
There were some quite cheap cars yesterday. That Ferrari was £20 - £25k less than Ferrari dealer price.
Paradoxically the most likely source of a cheap car now is an auction trader or a dealer operating on limited funds who needs cash to see him through Christmas and cannot afford to hold stock for when the market (traditionally) picks up in January.

thats good, I emailed Joe Dowd earlier this morning - look forward to hearing what he says.
Out of interest what do you think I can get for about £8K, new shape V70, SE spec (leather) up to 100K miles. A local small dealer has an 01/X plate 2.4(140)SE at £6995. Am I likely to get into a diesel for that sort of cash ?
Oddly a 170 will be cheaper for me to insure than a 140!

I'll take two then, one for me and the wife!

A lot depends on the weather too..
Back in 1982 when we were selling and repairing cars the weather in Jan was really bad - -20C at night and everything frozen up all day - seemed to go on for a few weeks. We saw virtually no customers apart from the odd call out for a duff battery and one or two burst rads. I think it was '82 anyway (maybe '83) but it was very cold - and people don't go out buying cars when the weather's like that.

Good memory! In Gloucestershire, according to the BBC website:
"The coldest night of the 20th century was Wednesday Jan 13 1982."
I remember it as I was in Sheffield walking 2 miles home from an evening job that night. I was wearing T Shirt, jumper and donkey jacket (None of your fancy fleeces back then) and it *was* a bit fresh. Then again, in Sheffield it was only -18.

PS On thread, hope it is cheap now, as I've got Joe Dowd looking for a car for me at the moment. He did make the point that the slump in prices now means fleets hold their stock a bit longer, so finding a vehicle is a bit tougher.
