Lexus and Skoda shouldn't really be in those positions, they need to get working on image.

Ha!

Reminds me of a family holiday on the west coast of Scotland some years ago when my son was about 10. He was walking through a car park with my wife (who doesn't know much about cars) and spotted a Lexus LS400. "Look Mum, a Lexus", He says. "Oh, I don't like those big ugly Korean cars", says Mum. The old boy sitting in the LS400 (window down) didn't look very chuffed!

And in Korea a 'hot dog' isn't quite the same thing as it is in New York, as JC constantly used to remind us. Pity TG didn't include the new KIA Sportage in their test. That and the Hyundai Tucson are very good indeed.

JC gave the Kia Sorento a bad review in one particular Sunday paper a few months back, every other review seems to say their ok.

The thread began about which cars women liked guys to drive. Well there was a movie back in the 70's or early 80's entitled 'The Man Who Loved Women'. And he drove an Alfa Guilia TI saloon. You know, a 105 Series, like the cop cars in 'The Italian Job'. I used to be so deep into Alfas No Dosh wouldn't believe it. And if I ever had a heated garage for a classic, an Alfa Guilia TI would be my car.

If I recall correctly they said the Getz was a perfectly decent car but wasn't particularly cheap & the Coupe was a good car and good value. I can't see what Hyundia have got to complain about.

As to the general assertion that a used Golf or Focus can prove cheaper to run than a new Pacific Rim car just take a look at resale values of some of these cars and you can see where they're coming from.

As for Hyundai being a better brand than Lexus I don't know as I've never owned a Hyundai but in the last few years I have owned a Lexus, a Porsche, a Mercedes and a BMW all bought new (apart from the Lexus) and I know which order I'd put them in. Hint: a german marque would not be at the top.

perodua cars are rubbish (think we can all agree)

proton have finally sorted out the styling but nothing else

kia are dreadfully dull, boring cars made so so cheap

hyundai have a lot of 5 year plus models in their forecourt - most of which would have been suited to ten years ago.

daewoo - well never respected any gm motors car, let alone one which is made on a budget of $2,000 dollars.

Having had a lot of hyundais, the come seems to be going forward - but it just seems like they are constantly missing the boat on establishing themselves as a key player.

Firstly, the dealer network isnt great (most of the dealers with in it are amature).

Part prices are ridiclously expensive for a fleet company to even consider them (i know of two who have because of the 5 year warranty, but get turned of by the highish insurance groups and part prices).

Thirdly, they fail to heavily discount models which are woeful in comparison to the rest of the market. (the accent, tuscan, elantra, sonata - which should have been fazed out by now anyhow).

The one good car (not great, lot of common faults keep reoccuring) the Getz, which has good space, okish reliability, ok looks, and acceptable engine range - is well over priced.

Yet not to worry.

a new sonata is on its way early next year (hyundai H.Q. in uk take delivery of thiers in late feb i think)

A new accent is on the way - still waiting for a full unveiling of the car

and a facelift getz.

Also, i presonally dont rate the coupe.

Mainly because the 2 guys in our fleet who have BOTH had part engine rebuilds within 20,000 miles.
Paint work is awful, and every seat seems to creak with the slightest movement.
Saying that one of them has just hit 90,000 miles - and only faults since the engine rebuild have been electric window motor failure and gear box reverse problems.
Not to bad compared to the laguna problems within the fleet!!

But paintwork and panel support is awful, even on the coupe - spo easily dented and scratched.

anyhow, ive been around hyundias to much!!!

Still when you can buy a car for less than 2 grand 3 years old, do 35,000 miles in less than a year generally trouble free and hit 100,000k - let me know what your driving, ill have one of them next.

Poor old Hyundai.

But when SWMBO had the very first Toyota Carina model it was the custom to say such things about Jap cars; however, for the first time she experienced trouble free motoring and we had Toyotas for years and years (or the odd Mazda) until they started making them outside Japan. On analogy, I expect to have little trouble with V6 Sonata. I'll post if I am proved wrong!

I'm thinking of a Getz for my next car, so could you list these common faults? (All I've heard are good things about reliability , e.g. the Which report where 30+ Getzs had zero breakdowns in first year).

> ... is well over priced

The 1.1 CDX is £6800 from drivethedeal. For a 5-door car with all mod-cons (including aircon) that's very cheap. Only other cars I can think of with that spec in that price range are Picanto, Panda and Charade.

How about East German?

Fellow in Derbyshire collects Trabrants - has dozens of them now...:-)

Apparently the local council is getting enraged because, it claims, they are an eyesore.

first of all - i would buy a getz myself over a corsa or polo - purely because of the 5 year warranty.

just ensure you sell it beofre the warranty runs out.

the faults im aware of...
* reverse gear selector still playing up (common for most hyundia cars)
* window motors (for some reason rear driver side every time) seems to go on the 3 people i know have getzs/
* driver seat fold mechanism gets stiff randomly and refuses to move for about 10 attempts - not terrible but stil a pain in a 3 door.
* front indicator bulbs always seem to go on all 3 of them every couple of months (dealer cant find a problem - to much of a coincidence for 3 owners to keep geting the same fault). not expensive just a consistent inconvience.
* rust common under the bonnet on unprotected componenets after a year has passed.
* around 30,000 miles alternator on 2 of the cars i know about packed in.
* window rubbers require replacing every 20k

they all have other little problmes often trivial (stuck headrest for one) - yet reliability seems dogged.

if your going to buy one hang on a few months.
they are currently offering free insurance (demand 30k free servicing to!) - however a facelift is due at the end of 2005.

hope this is of help.

> the faults I'm aware of ...

Thanks - interesting to get some concrete info about faults. While none of the faults seem *too* terrible, return trips to the dealer are always tiresome. I'm in my fourth year of Yaris ownership, with zero faults so far - maybe I'll just hang on to the Yaris for a few more years.
