Picasso spare wheel thefts - Hugo {P}
A client of mine who has a company Picasso told me about this. It may be common knowledge here but I haven't seen any threads about it here.

Apparently, wheels, jacks and all when stored under the boot in the normal way have been stolen.

I won't say how but suffice to say I'll be advising FiL to keep his in his boot, not under it.

Most French cars since the Simca 1100 of 1971 have had underslung spare wheels. Same goes for Shalambras and Zafiras. The Modus has a complicated clamping device to prevent theft. Most French car franchises offer locking kits for £30 - £40. Things are changing now, though, as C4s have spacesavers in the boot. And worth remembering that Citroen 'spares' are often not the same size as the road wheels, so nick a Picasso spare and it will be a very basic wheel and tyre that proably won't match the road wheels on many Picassos.

Going back about five years, SWMBO had a Saxo, I had a 106. Came out one morning to find my spare propped against the side of the car (it had been used, though not much) and her unused one gone. The local main dealer reckoned they were selling as many as ten replacements some weeks, since a tv programme had demonstrated how easy it was to spring the cradle - thanks guys, that's public service broadcasting for you.

Ever since then we habitually swopped the spare with one of the fronts after about 100 miles whenever we changed cars, at the time always running Pugs or Cits. Apparantly if the tyre has been used it is useless to most thieves, who want to sell it on as brand new.

Shame no-one makes fake stick on nail kits for spare wheels. Thief gets under car, sees nail sticking out of tyre, goes away empty handed....fake dog doo would also be another way of putting someone off the whole thing too.

Some months after we got our Berlingo, we discovered the spare wheel was missing. The dealer told us these things tend to get stolen.

Since that day, our spare wheel has always been kept in the boot. Happily, the Berlingo has a boot big enough to accomodate the spare wheel as well as the kitchen sink.

Some manufacturers sell aftermarket accessories for preventing the spare from being stolen.

*Old fogey alert* The 1962 Renault 8 had one as well. Of course cars of that era had solid rubber tyres anyway...

Back to today, a friend with a Zafira had his spare wheel stolen last month - he reported it to the police and they said that 7 other Zafiras had been done that night in his town!

The rumour is that the new Vauxhall kit to combat this isn't very good, but the Peugeot kit is better.

My wifes Zafira had the spare wheel stolen a few weeks ago whilst she was parked on a main road about 4 o clock in the afternoon, neighbour had same thing about a month previously, I contacted plod & they reckon its an easy way of getting the next 'fix'.
I've since bought a spare from a second hand tyre shop for not a lot of money, strangely there was a plentiful supply.
I have also modified the hook that holds the spare wheel cage up to the car by welding extra material onto the hook so I can padlock it all in place, it ain't coming out now unless they get into the car & lower it from the boot.

Had a saxo a few years back myself - first thing I had fitted was the "spare wheel security bolt" - available as a dealer fit for £50 (at the time). Sure most dealers will have something for this purpose now, give your dealer a call and ask !!

Apparently Galaxy models have also been targeted.

Spare wheels are unlikely to be stolen from Shlahambras - have you ever tried getting the spare wheel off one?

I'm about to get my SECOND replacement spare wheel mount under warranty. The first was only fitted in OCTOBER. The wire rope tangles up in the winder.

They do things differently round here...

Spare wheel is still there 2 years on, but some low-life has had the roof bars.
